How much do substation gis jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for substation gis in the United States is $104,604.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,500.00 and $135,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a substation GIS?

Substation GIS refers to Gas Insulated Substations, which are a type of electrical substation that uses a gas, typically sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), to insulate and protect electrical equipment. Unlike traditional air-insulated substations, GIS are more compact and can be installed in areas with limited space, such as urban environments or indoors. They offer greater reliability, reduced maintenance, and enhanced safety due to their enclosed design. GIS technology is especially useful in locations where environmental conditions are harsh or where space constraints make conventional substations impractical.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a substation GIS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Substation GIS Engineer, you need expertise in electrical engineering, GIS mapping, and substation design, typically backed by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with GIS software (such as ArcGIS), AutoCAD, and SCADA systems is crucial for project planning and system integration. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure accurate data interpretation and successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are essential for developing reliable substation layouts, optimizing asset management, and maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in substation GIS roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Substation GIS roles often encounter challenges such as integrating data from various sources, ensuring data accuracy, and staying updated with evolving GIS technologies. Managing large datasets and maintaining effective communication between engineering, operations, and IT teams can also be demanding. Addressing these challenges typically involves ongoing training, utilizing robust data management tools, and fostering strong collaboration across departments to ensure smooth project execution and continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Substation Gis vs Substation Technician?
