Store Manager - Moana Lane Garden Center

Moana Nursery LLC

Reno, NV • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

Your Future Role:
The Moana Lane Store Manager is responsible for the overall performance of Moana Nursery's flagship and most complex Garden Center. This position leads the day-to-day operations, customer shopping experience and financial performance of the retail store and its related businesses, including the greenhouse, indoor retail areas, eCommerce fulfillment and seasonal retail operations while working in conjunction with our on site Floral team & Stem Studio.
This is a highly visible leadership position that requires the ability to bring multiple departments, leaders and priorities together into one coordinated customer experience. The Store Manager establishes clear expectations, develops the retail leadership team and creates a culture of accountability, communication, customer service and continuous improvement.
In partnership with company ownership, retail general management, other Store Managers, Merchants, Merchandisers, Growers and shared-service teams, this position implements policies, strategies and organizational improvements that support balanced and profitable growth.
The Store Manager is responsible for the effective in-store execution of marketing strategies and promotions, including signage, merchandising, retail-team communication and coaching. This position ensures that monthly promotions and key initiatives are consistently understood by teammates and clearly communicated to customers.
Moana Nursery is a family-owned, entrepreneurial business that continues to evolve. The Store Manager works directly with ownership on a regular-often daily-basis to respond to changing business conditions, evaluate opportunities, solve problems and improve the store. This requires a leader who is comfortable receiving direct feedback, contributing thoughtful recommendations and adapting as priorities and opportunities change.
This position provides significant freedom to lead and improve the business. The Store Manager will have room to exercise creativity and sound judgment in areas such as merchandising, hiring, teammate development, scheduling, customer experience, events and the use of store space. We want this leader to experiment, learn and help Moana Lane become better.
That flexibility exists within clearly established operating processes. Receiving procedures, ERP and point-of-sale use, inventory controls, product movement and other core business practices must be followed consistently. The Store Manager is expected to improve results and challenge assumptions without creating unnecessary variation in the systems that protect inventory accuracy, financial reporting and coordination across the company.
The Store Manager must be equally comfortable leading people, analyzing financial results, solving operational problems and working directly on the sales floor. Ultimately, this position ensures that Moana Lane operates safely, efficiently and profitably while providing an exceptional experience for our customers and teammates.
Your Specific Job Responsibilities:
  • Upholds and enforces Moana Nursery's safety policies and maintains a safe, organized and customer-ready store.
  • Leads the overall operating and financial performance of the Moana Lane Garden Center.
  • Creates a welcoming, engaging and solutions-based customer shopping experience.
  • Works closely and communicates regularly with company ownership regarding store performance, changing priorities, emerging opportunities and operational challenges.
  • Maintains a visible leadership presence throughout the store and regularly engages with customers and teammates.
  • Establishes clear expectations and develops, coaches and holds the Assistant Store Manager, department leaders and retail team accountable for performance and follow-through.
  • Leads recruiting, onboarding, training, scheduling and teammate development based on customer traffic, seasonal demand and the needs of the business.
  • Exercises creativity and sound judgment in merchandising, hiring, scheduling, customer experience, events and store execution while consistently following established receiving, ERP/POS, inventory-control and other companywide business processes.
  • Coordinates the garden center, greenhouse, indoor retail areas, receiving, eCommerce fulfillment and related store operations into one consistent customer experience.
  • Partners with Merchants, Merchandisers, Buyers, Growers, Marketing and shared-service teams to execute promotions, displays, seasonal transitions and merchandising standards.
  • Ensures promotions, signage and key initiatives are understood by the retail team and communicated clearly to customers.
  • Ensures products are properly received, priced, stocked, maintained and presented while protecting inventory accuracy and reducing shrink, spoilage and unnecessary product handling.
  • Ensures plants are healthy, properly watered and professionally presented while awaiting a new home.
  • Supports and coordinates with the florist, Stem Studio and related floral operations to increase customer engagement and sales performance.
  • Coordinates store events that support horticultural education, customer engagement and profitable retail activity.
  • Develops labor plans and manages store resources to balance customer service, operational workload and financial performance.
  • Reviews store results, identifies lessons learned and takes corrective action to improve sales, gross margin, labor efficiency, inventory performance and the customer experience.
  • Identifies problems and opportunities early, communicates priorities clearly and follows through until the work is complete.

How Success Will Be Measured:
Success in this position will be measured by the Store Manager's ability to:
  • Build and develop a strong, accountable leadership team.
  • Deliver an exceptional and consistent customer experience.
  • Improve sales, gross margin and overall store profitability.
  • Manage labor efficiently while maintaining appropriate customer service.
  • Maintain accurate, healthy and well-presented inventory.
  • Reduce shrink, spoilage and operational waste.
  • Execute marketing initiatives, seasonal transitions, promotions and events effectively.
  • Maintain a safe, organized and customer-ready store.
  • Improve teammate engagement, communication and retention.
  • Identify problems early and follow through on corrective action.

The successful Store Manager builds a leadership team capable of operating the store consistently, not only when the Store Manager is physically present. The store should remain organized, customer-ready and financially disciplined throughout the year, including during the intense spring season and major seasonal transitions.
Physical Requirements & Activity:
  • Applicant must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Applicant must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in changing weather conditions.
  • Applicant must be able to work throughout a large and active retail property.
  • Applicant must be able to lift and move up to 75 pounds and assist with normal retail activities when necessary.
  • This is an active leadership position that requires a regular presence on the sales floor, in the greenhouse and throughout the store.

Expertise & Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of three years of retail management experience.
  • Experience leading supervisors, department leaders or a large retail team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sales, labor, inventory and operating expenses.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Financial literacy and the ability to understand and act upon store operating results.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate and follow through in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience creating staffing schedules and adjusting labor to match business demand.

Nice to Have Skills or Experiences:
  • Management experience in a high-volume, seasonal or operationally complex retail environment.
  • Experience managing multiple departments or business units within one location.
  • Garden center, horticulture, greenhouse or floral experience.
  • Experience with EPICOR Eagle or a comparable retail point-of-sale and inventory system.
  • Experience with eCommerce order fulfillment.
  • Experience coordinating retail events and seasonal merchandising transitions.
  • Experience implementing marketing promotions in a retail environment.
  • Experience improving inventory accuracy, labor productivity or customer-service results.
  • Knowledge of Northern Nevada horticulture and High Desert gardening.

Horticultural knowledge is valuable, but it is not a substitute for strong leadership and retail operating experience. We can teach plants more easily than we can teach ownership, accountability and sound judgment.
Your Future Work Schedule:
Our retail stores are open seven days a week, and our busiest days are frequently weekends and holidays. The Moana Lane Store Manager must be available when the business and team need leadership most.
This position requires regular weekend availability, flexibility during seasonal peaks and the ability to adjust working hours based on store activity, staffing needs, events and operational priorities. Spring is our most demanding season and requires an especially high level of commitment, energy and flexibility.
Please clearly list your availability when completing the application.
Your Future Salary & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $75,000-$90,000 annually, based on experience, demonstrated leadership ability and relevant expertise.
This position is also eligible for profit sharing and the following benefits:
  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays
  • Profit Sharing
  • 401(k) plus Company Match
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • Store Discount
  • Training and Educational Opportunities
  • Career Advancement

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a confident and approachable retail leader who enjoys people, understands business and takes ownership of results.
This person does not wait for someone else to identify problems or provide every answer. They walk the store, listen to customers and teammates, study the numbers, establish priorities and take action. They understand that seemingly small issues involving staffing, inventory, product care, signage, cleanliness or follow-through can become large problems when they are ignored.
The ideal candidate can move comfortably between strategic planning and hands-on execution. They may begin the day reviewing financial performance, spend the afternoon coaching a department leader and finish by helping solve an immediate customer or operational problem.
This individual remains calm under pressure, communicates directly and respectfully and can manage multiple priorities without losing sight of the customer. They set high standards, explain why those standards matter and hold themselves and others accountable.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a closely held, family-owned business where decisions can be made quickly and direct communication with ownership is a regular part of the position. They are neither overly dependent on detailed instructions nor resistant to established processes. They know when to create, when to recommend a change and when consistency is more valuable than individual preference.
Most importantly, the ideal candidate wants to build a strong team that succeeds together. They are interested in a meaningful leadership career, not simply their next retail management job.
