What is a studio designer?

A Studio Designer is a professional responsible for creating, planning, and executing the visual layout and aesthetic elements of a studio environment. This can include interior design, set design for photography or film, and optimizing spaces for functionality and creativity. Studio Designers often collaborate with clients, artists, and production teams to ensure that the studio meets both practical needs and artistic visions. Their role may also involve selecting furniture, lighting, color schemes, and materials to achieve the desired look and feel.

What is a studio designer?

Studio designers oversee the production and presentation of a studio for clients. As a studio designer, you may construct locations for exhibits, artistic space, or work areas. You brainstorm creative ideas for the space provided and work on the layout to build each vision. Your job duties have you preparing and presenting ideas as sketches, plans, or models, and then building the set. Studio designers work closely with their clients to create the artistic look they want. You may also be responsible for ordering supplies and managing the construction of displays.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a studio designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Studio Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, visual communication, and proficiency with design software, usually supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and experience with digital asset management systems are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality visual materials that meet client needs and maintain brand consistency in fast-paced studio environments.

How does a studio designer typically collaborate with other creative professionals during a project?

As a Studio Designer, collaboration is a key part of the role. You will frequently work alongside art directors, copywriters, account managers, and production teams to ensure that design concepts align with client objectives and brand standards. Regular meetings, brainstorming sessions, and feedback loops are common, enabling you to integrate diverse viewpoints into your work. Clear communication and openness to critique are essential, as projects often evolve based on team input and client feedback.

Job description

Are you a studio or design manager within a high-end interior design practice, or a senior designer ready to step into a studio leadership role?

An established luxury residential interior design studio is seeking an exceptional Studio Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our Dallas studio.

This is a pivotal role within the business—acting as the right hand to the Principal and ensuring the studio runs seamlessly across multiple high-end residential projects.

You will oversee project flow, support and guide the design team, and maintain momentum across all stages of delivery. With the Principal often working across locations, you will be responsible for holding the studio together operationally—ensuring clarity, accountability, and consistency across every project.

This role requires a thoughtful balance of design sensibility, operational rigour, and confident, steady leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Studio Leadership & Team Oversight

● Act as the central point of coordination for the Dallas studio

● Support, guide, and hold accountability across senior, mid-level designers, and assistants

● Monitor team workload, priorities, and deadlines across all projects

● Check in regularly with team members to ensure progress, clarity, and support

● Step in to troubleshoot challenges and unblock issues quickly

● Maintain a calm, structured, and solutions-focused studio environment

Principal Support

● Act as a trusted extension of the Principal in her absence, ensuring continuity across all projects and studio operations

● Maintain the smooth running of the studio, ensuring decisions are implemented clearly and effectively

● Identify and escalate key moments requiring the Principal’s input, with clarity and foresight

● Translate the Principal’s design direction into actionable guidance for the team

Work closely with the Principal’s Executive Assistant to manage her time as a critical project resource—anticipating when her input is required and ensuring availability for key design decisions, client meetings, and project milestones

Plan ahead to structure the Principal’s involvement across the week, balancing high-level oversight with protected time for focused design input

Coordination & Communication

● Oversee communication across all projects, ensuring clarity, consistency, and momentum at every stage

● Guide and support designers in their coordination with clients, contractors, and consultants

● Maintain visibility across all project correspondence, stepping in where needed to provide direction or resolve issues

● Ensure information flows effectively—confirming the team has what they need, when they need it

● Hold accountability across the team, following up to ensure key actions, decisions, and communications are progressed in a timely manner

Documentation & Process

● Oversee the structure and integrity of all project documentation across the studio

● Support and guide designers in maintaining accurate FF&E schedules, procurement logs, and project records

● Ensure information is organized, aligned, and readily accessible at all times

● Notice and resolve gaps in process or documentation before they impact delivery

● Thoughtfully evolve studio systems to bring greater clarity, efficiency, and ease to the way projects are run

Skills & Experience

● Proven experience within high-end residential interior design, in a design management, studio management, or senior project management role

● A strong background in luxury project delivery, with a clear understanding of the pace, detail, and expectations of private residential clients

● Experience leading or overseeing designers and multiple projects simultaneously within a design-led studio environment

● Deep familiarity with FF&E processes, procurement, and the realities of bespoke design coordination

● Excellent organizational skills, with meticulous attention to detail and a respect for process

● A confident and considered communicator, able to guide, challenge, and support a team with clarity

● Commercial awareness, including experience managing budgets, tracking costs, and aligning design intent with financial parameters

● Proactive, calm under pressure, and highly solutions-driven

● Comfortable operating independently while remaining closely aligned with the Principal and overall studio direction

Software & Tools

● Proficient in Studio Designer

● Working knowledge of design documentation and processes (CAD understanding beneficial)

Salary & Benefits

• Opportunity to work on high-end, design-led projects
