To thrive as a Student Web Developer, you should have a good grasp of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, often backed by coursework or personal projects demonstrating basic web development skills. Familiarity with code editors, version control systems like Git, and content management systems such as WordPress is common in this role. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and good communication skills help student web developers contribute effectively to teams and meet project deadlines. These skills and qualities allow student developers to build functional websites, adapt to evolving technologies, and work collaboratively with peers.
A Student Web Developer is typically a university or college student who develops and maintains websites as part of their coursework, internship, or part-time job. They work with web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Django. Their responsibilities may include designing web pages, fixing bugs, and optimizing website performance. This role helps students gain hands-on experience in web development while building their portfolios for future careers.
As a Student Web Developer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as developing or updating website pages, debugging code, and assisting with front-end or back-end development under the guidance of senior developers or supervisors. You may also be involved in testing new features, implementing design updates, or integrating third-party services. Collaboration with designers, other developers, and sometimes marketing or content teams is common to ensure that projects meet both technical and visual standards. These experiences offer valuable hands-on learning, help build your professional portfolio, and provide insights into professional software development processes.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following software development activities.
Task1: Linking local services for seniors (obtained from the InformAlberta repository) with the platform.
The data is captured in the InformAlberta, and other databases are not consistently structured. Therefore, we will develop a systematic methodology and software tools to standardize the description of services so that they can be efficiently and effectively linked to the AVOID digital platform. This task involves:
(i) data cleaning
(ii) data alignment with a geographical model of Alberta and a conceptual/taxonomic
model of services, and
(iii) development of a multi-faceted user interface to query the repository, relying
on a conversational agent.
Task2: Evolution of the SoDa-TaP data-analysis platform.
SoDa-TaP imports social-platform posts in CSV format and process it through a data analysis and slicing and dicing pipeline. This task involves the following subtasks:
- extending the pipeline for CSVs from different social platforms, such as reddit and job postings from indeed, ziprecruiter, etc;
- integrating additional dictionaries for lexical analysis;
- integrating existing code for community analysis as an additional slicing function;
- integrating new agentic workflows, based on large language models, to link entities mentioned in the ingested data, such as, for example, service provider organizations, employers, and job postings, to posts on the online social platform.
The employee will regularly test the evolving platform based on a suite of data sets managed by Dr. Stroulia.
