Job description

The New School Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program is a New York State Education Department-funded program that offers financial, academic, and socio-emotional support for five years of undergraduate study and related educational activities. It is designed specifically for economically and educationally disadvantaged students who might not meet traditional college admissions criteria but demonstrate promise and potential for academic achievement and success. At The New School, the HEOP office is housed under the Office of Equity and Belonging in which they will coordinate, evaluate, and administer academic, and operational activities of the program to foster student growth and success. HEOP Mentors will report to the HEOP Manager.
This position is from July 1st - August 8th and is 28 hours per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the HEOP summer program with event preparation including but not limited to transporting materials, decorating & arranging spaces, and event breakdown/clean-up.
  • Host weekly check-ins with designated cohort of summer program participants
  • Attend summer program classes with designated cohort to take attendance and monitor class participation
  • Monitor student summer program progress through ongoing communication with faculty, tutors, and HEOP Manager
  • Provide in-class assistance to the assigned instructor(s)
  • Serve as liaison between instructors, students, and EOP Office staff
  • Oversee study hours for summer program
  • Report all disruptive in-class behavior immediately to the HEOP Manager
  • Refer ongoing academic issues to the HEOP Manager
  • Perform administrative duties related to the functional operation of the academic requirements for the summer program
  • Participate in the assessment efforts of the EOP by assisting in the administration of surveys to students, as well as filling out assessment tools aimed at understanding learning outcomes

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Passionate about access/opportunity programs
  • Be open-minded, and culturally competent
  • Takes initiative, works independently and collaboratively, strong work ethic
  • Meets deadlines promptly, communicates clearly, and asks for help when needed
  • Uses good judgment, thinks critically and thoughtfully
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Assist students with the development of their study skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms such as but not limited to IG, Facebook, etc.
  • Experience with researching, brainstorming, ideating, and creating programming and marketing materials
  • Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 35lbs
  • Must be available to work during the entirety of the summer program from July 1st - August 8th (28 hours per week)
  • Must be available to attend in person training on July 1st and July 2nd

WORK MODE
On-Campus Position - Employees in this position are expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours due to the nature of the work being that which is not feasible, or not in the best interest of the organization, to be performed remotely.

The HEOP will also serve as liaison between instructors, students, and EOP Office staff, report ant disruptive in-class behavior, and refer any ongoing academic issues to the HEOP Manager. They will also participate in the assessment efforts of the EOP by assisting in the administration of surveys to students, as well as filling out assessment tools aimed at understanding learning outcomes. They will support HEOP Manager in other administrative duties.
