Job description
As a member of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Student Success Leadership Team, the AVPSS contributes to institutional planning and decision-making by helping align academic, administrative, and budgetary priorities across the Vice Provost's portfolio, with particular emphasis on partnership with the Office of the Registrar regarding academic policies, curricular experiential learning pathways, and student records processes that directly impact student success and the student experience.
The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Student Success provides strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight of university-wide initiatives that strengthen undergraduate education, enhance the student experience, and improve persistence, progression, and degree completion for undergraduate and graduate students within the division of Academic Affairs. The unit advances a cohesive and data-informed student success ecosystem by aligning academic policies, advising and support services, high-impact learning practices, and technology-enabled interventions to remove barriers and promote timely degree completion.
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent terminal degree) from an accredited institution in higher education, education, educational leadership, student affairs, counseling, psychology, public administration, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience working in higher education with experience in advancing departmental, college, unit, or institutional student success.
- Advanced expertise in designing, leading, and scaling comprehensive student success initiatives that improve retention, persistence, credit momentum, and graduation outcomes.
- Strong strategic planning and project management skills, with the ability to translate institutional priorities into actionable goals, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional teams and initiatives in a shared-governance environment.
- Proven capacity to analyze and use institutional data, dashboards, and predictive analytics to inform decision-making, assess program effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement.
- Deep working knowledge of higher education policies, academic regulations, and compliance requirements that impact student progression and degree completion.
- Demonstrated expertise in personnel management, including hiring, supervision, performance evaluation, professional development, and team building.
- Strong budget management and resource allocation skills, including experience aligning resources with strategic priorities.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and communicate complex information clearly.
- Demonstrated consultative, collaborative, and relationship-centered leadership style, with strength in consensus-building and change management.
- Strong commitment to advancing the mission of a public, land-grant 1890 institution.
- 10-12 or more years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including senior-level leadership in student success, academic affairs, enrollment management, advising, or related areas.
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent terminal degree) from an accredited institution in higher education, educational leadership, student affairs, public administration, counseling, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale, institution-wide student success initiatives with measurable impact on retention, progression, credit momentum, and graduation outcomes.
- Advanced expertise in strategic planning, assessment, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement practices.
- Strong fiscal and operational leadership experience, including budget development, resource allocation, and personnel management.
- Experience leveraging student success technologies and analytics platforms (e.g., early alert systems, advising systems, degree audit tools, predictive analytics) to inform decision-making and improve outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and operationalize academic policies and procedures in collaboration with faculty, governance bodies, and the Office of the Registrar.
- Proven capacity to lead change, build cross-functional partnerships, and foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
- Participation in executive leadership development programs or professional training in higher education leadership, change management, or institutional effectiveness is strongly preferred.
