Student shadowing is a process where a student observes another student or a professional in a real-world setting, such as a classroom or workplace, to gain insight into daily routines, responsibilities, and expectations. The goal is to help the student understand what a specific role or environment is like, often as part of career exploration or academic planning. Shadowing experiences can last from a few hours to several days and provide valuable firsthand knowledge that can inform educational or career decisions.

What can I expect during a typical day while participating in a student shadowing program?

You may rotate between different team members to gain a broad perspective on the role and workplace dynamics. Expect to take notes, engage in discussions about career paths, and learn about the challenges and rewards of the profession. This experience is designed to help you understand workplace culture and clarify your career interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a student shadowing role, and why are they important?

Job description

Veterinary Student Externship Program

Emancipet is seeking veterinary student externs. Emancipet's Externship Program offers currently enrolled Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students experience in our non-profit clinics. We are so excited to have students work with us on our mission to make veterinary care affordable and accessible for everyone. For 26 years we've been building up a national network of low-cost veterinary clinics, strategically located in underserved communities. Inaccessibility of veterinary care has deep and tangled roots in other complex social problems like poverty, racism, and economic inequality. Our clinics aim to transform communities into places where no one ever has to forego veterinary care because the cost is out of reach.

There are no application windows; you can apply at any time. Please specify the desired dates of your externship as well as which city (Austin, Killen, Houston, Philadelphia) you would like to visit.

Our clinics: All clinics run several high-volume medical "modules":

  • Healthy Pet Services (physical exams, minor skin & ear treatments, vaccines, heartworm testing, FeLV/FIV testing, microchipping, deworming, prevention - available in all communities)
  • Spay/Neuter (HQHVSN surgery 30+ patients a day - available in all communities)
  • Heartworm Treatment (available in Houston & Austin)
  • Special Surgery (a variety of out patient surgeries - available in Austin)
  • Dentistry (available in Austin)

Student Experience: You will be paired with a veterinarian each day shadowing in a specific module. Depending on your knowledge and previous experience, you may be allowed to perform venipuncture, IVC placement, intubation, IV induction, surgical prep, anesthetic monitoring, and post operative monitoring. At this time, all surgeries are performed on client owned animals. Therefore, we do not allow students to perform surgery. We are actively looking to establish community partnerships with shelters/rescues in hopes of incorporating surgical experience into the student extern experience in the future.

There may also be an opportunity for you to shadow our Chief Medical Officer and/or Veterinarian Trainer to introduce you to the non-clinical operational responsibilities of our veterinarians in leadership positions. Shadowing of these veterinarians will be primarily available in Austin.

Please secure your own housing.

This opportunity is only open to students currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine program.
