Job description

Role Summary

The Practicum Student will work alongside Calgary Dream Centre staff to support the Tower Program and Community Housing initiatives. In this role, the student will assist with day-to-day operations and provide compassionate, professional support to individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction. This placement is offered in collaboration with Ambrose University as part of the BHS Practicum program. The student will be mentored by the Volunteer Coordinator, who serves as the Site Supervisor, and will be encouraged to contribute fresh perspectives and ideas while developing their practical skills in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Client Support & Program Participation

  • Assist staff in delivering daily programming and structured activities for residents and community members
  • Build supportive, professional relationships with clients while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Observe and participate in intake processes, case planning, and group sessions as appropriate
  • Provide a compassionate, non-judgmental presence to individuals navigating recovery and crisis

Administrative & Organizational Support

  • Assist with documentation, data entry, and record-keeping in accordance with agency policies
  • Support staff with outreach activities, event coordination, and community engagement initiatives
  • Contribute to program development and evaluation by sharing observations and ideas

Professional Development

  • Attend and actively participate in weekly supervision meetings with the Site Supervisor (minimum 1 hour per 10 hours worked)
  • Establish personal learning goals at the start of the placement in collaboration with the supervisor
  • Engage reflectively with experiences in the field to connect theory and practice
  • Complete all required assignments, journals, and evaluations for the Ambrose BHS practicum course


Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Currently enrolled in Year 3 of the Ambrose University Bachelor of Behavioural Science (BHS) program
  • In good academic standing and approved for practicum by the BHS Program Coordinator
  • Valid Police Information Check (Criminal Record Check)
  • Completion of any additional checks required by the Calgary Dream Centre (e.g., vulnerable sector check)
  • Genuine interest in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and poverty
  • Alignment with the Calgary Dream Centre's mission and values
