Other Conditions:
To begin approximately August 2026, pending position clearance and/or availability of funds. The position is located at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and is renewable annually for the duration of the grant, contingent upon availability of funds, program/operational needs, satisfactory performance, and good academic standing.
This is an I I-month position, which means the position is on duty throughout the year except during periods of authorized leave.
This graduate assistant position supports the archival processing and redescription of Hawaiian Collection archival materials for the Kaho'iwai: Reclaiming Hawaiian Knowledge Sovereignty grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Specifically, this graduate assistant, under the supervision of Hawaiian Collection librarians, will process and redescribe a selection of Hawaiian Collection archival materials and support the development of the Hawaiian Knowledge Organization System (HKOS) and its application to Hawaiian sovereignty-, culture-, and history-related archival materials. This position is in the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections Department of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Library and is renewable annually for the duration of the grant, subject to funding availability and good academic standing. The duties and responsibilities are the following.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Appraisal and inventory of archival materials.
• Arrangement, description, and redescription of archival materials.
• Preserving archival materials.
• Drafting archival finding aids that include background information, biographical notes, scope and content notes, and access and use policies.
• Support the Hawaiian Knowledge Organization System (HKOS) term development.
• Support HKOS community consultations.
• Support HKOS Knowledge Organization Summits and team gatherings.
Minimum Qualifications
• A classified degree-seeking* student in a Masters or Doctoral program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
• In good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Maintain 6 credits per semester except those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis).
* Students enrolled in only a graduate certificate program are not eligible. Visiting students are generally not eligible.
Desired Qualifications
• Experience arranging, describing, redescribing, preserving, and/or creating finding aids for archival materials.
• Experience conducting research in archives and/or libraries.
• Experience consulting with and/or collaborating with Hawaiian and/or Hawai'i communities.
• Experience with event planning and providing logistical support.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian sovereignty, history, culture, and/or current events.
• Knowledge of Pacific Islands' sovereignty, histories, cultures, and/or current events.
• Proficiency in the Hawaiian language, a Pacific Islands language, or a non-Indigenous language of Hawai'i or the Pacific Islands.
• Keen attention to detail and ability to synthesize information.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to work collaboratively.
• Demonstrated accuracy & dependability in performing work assignments.
• Ability to perform duties with little supervision after completion of training.
• Ability to train/supervise student assistant III, IV, and V.
• Demonstrated experience in Google and Word software.
