What is a student intern?

Student interns are individuals, typically enrolled in high school, college, or university, who participate in short-term work experiences with organizations to gain practical knowledge and skills related to their field of study. Internships can be paid or unpaid and are designed to provide hands-on learning, professional development, and networking opportunities. Student interns often perform entry-level tasks while observing and assisting experienced professionals, helping bridge the gap between academic learning and the workplace.

How does a student intern typically collaborate with full-time staff and other interns during their internship?

Student Interns often work closely with both full-time team members and fellow interns on projects and daily tasks. Collaboration usually involves attending team meetings, participating in brainstorming sessions, and contributing to group assignments. Interns are encouraged to ask questions, seek feedback, and network with colleagues to learn from their experience. This interactive environment helps interns develop communication skills, adapt quickly to professional settings, and build valuable relationships that can support future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Student Intern, you generally need strong academic performance, eagerness to learn, and relevant coursework or basic knowledge in your field. Familiarity with productivity tools such as Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and sometimes basic project management or industry-specific software, is often expected. Effective communication, adaptability, and a proactive attitude are standout soft skills for interns. These qualities are vital for contributing to the team, maximizing learning opportunities, and building a foundation for future professional growth.

Job description

Business Operations & Systems Intern Flexible Remote Internship | Full-Time Summer Opportunity with Part-Time Fall Potential Are you the type of person who color-codes spreadsheets for fun, loves organizing information, or gets weirdly satisfied checking tasks off a board? We’re looking for a highly organized and tech-savvy intern to help support business operations across multiple fast-paced car wash locations. This role is ideal for a student interested in:

  • Business Operations
  • Project Management
  • Data & Reporting
  • Entrepreneurship
  • HR / Organizational Leadership
  • Communications
  • Process Improvement
  • Technology & Systems

You’ll help keep leadership dashboards, project boards, and operational tasks organized and moving by supporting our management team behind the scenes. This is a remote position with flexible scheduling. We’re especially interested in students who can work closer to full-time hours during the summer to learn the business and then continue part-time during the school year.
What You’ll Do

  • Update and maintain Monday.com boards and workflows
  • Transfer information from management dashboards into team action boards
  • Monitor task progress and follow up on overdue items
  • Help organize operational projects and timelines
  • Support leadership with data cleanup and reporting updates
  • Keep systems accurate, organized, and current
  • Assist with process documentation and SOP organization
  • Help improve communication flow between leadership teams
  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or missing information in boards and systems

What We’re Looking For

  • Current college student (MSU students encouraged to apply)
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Comfortable learning new technology and systems quickly
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Self-directed and dependable while working remotely
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple moving pieces
  • Experience with Monday.com, Excel, Google Sheets, or project management tools is a plus
  • Bonus points if you enjoy systems, organization, analytics, or workflow optimization

Schedule & Flexibility

  • Summer: Preferred 30–40 hours/week to get fully trained and integrated
  • Fall Semester: Opportunity to continue in a flexible part-time role
  • Mostly remote with occasional in-person leadership meetings or site visits to locations in Lansing, MI
    • Must be able to commute to these locations when requested

Internship Highlights: This is not a coffee-run internship. You’ll work directly with leadership teams helping improve real business operations across multiple locations. If you enjoy structure, technology, communication, and making chaos feel organized, you’ll probably love this role. You’ll gain exposure to:

  • Operations management
  • Leadership communication
  • Business systems
  • Project coordination
  • KPI tracking
  • Organizational workflow
  • Multi-site business operations

Preferred Traits

  • Naturally proactive
  • Loves checklists and organization
  • Notices when details are missing
  • Comfortable asking questions
  • Enjoys turning messy systems into clean ones
  • Calm under pressure and good with follow-through
