Job description

Position Overview:
This practicum provides university students with hands-on experience working with children diagnosed with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Under the supervision of certified special education professionals, the practicum student will support instructional, behavioral, and social interventions in an inclusive or self-contained classroom setting.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in the delivery of individualized education plans (IEPs) and instructional strategies tailored to students with IDD and ASD
• Support students in academic, communication, and daily living skills development
• Participate in behavior support plans under the guidance of certified staff
• Facilitate social interactions and peer engagement among students
• Help implement structured teaching methods such as TEACCH, ABA, or PECS as appropriate
• Collect data on student behavior and progress toward IEP goals
• Observe and reflect on teaching practices, intervention strategies, and classroom management techniques
• Attend team meetings, trainings, or professional development sessions as required
• Maintain confidentiality and follow all school and district policies regarding student privacy and safety
Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a university program in Special Education, Psychology, Education, Speech-Language Pathology, or a related field
• Completion or concurrent enrollment in coursework related to developmental disabilities, autism, or educational methods preferred
• Strong interest in working with children with diverse needs
• Patience, empathy, and a commitment to inclusion and equity
• Ability to take direction and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
• Strong communication and observational skills
• Clearance of background check and/or TB screening as required by the site
