Student graphic designers often find it challenging to manage their time effectively between academic assignments and design projects for clients or campus organizations. Prioritizing deadlines, maintaining consistent quality across multiple tasks, and adapting to different feedback styles are typical hurdles. Learning to communicate clearly with clients and team members while meeting academic expectations can be demanding but also builds valuable project management skills. Many students benefit from using project management tools and seeking mentorship from faculty or experienced designers.

What are student graphic designers?

Student graphic designers are individuals, often enrolled in academic programs, who use their creativity and technical skills to create visual content for print, digital platforms, or other media. They typically work on projects such as posters, logos, social media graphics, and marketing materials, often as part of internships, campus organizations, or freelance work. This role helps students build a professional portfolio, gain real-world experience, and develop industry-relevant skills while still in school.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Student Graphic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Student Graphic Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, creativity, and basic proficiency in graphic design, often gained through coursework or self-study. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is crucial, and a portfolio showcasing your work is highly beneficial. Job description

ABOUT THE POSITION
Samet is looking for a versatile, detail-driven graphic designer who thrives on variety. This role supports Samet’s brand across a wide range of print and digital touchpoints — from jobsite signage and career fair materials to internal communications and company merchandise. The ideal candidate is a strong visual designer with sharp typographic instincts, a self-starter who can manage multiple concurrent projects with confidence, and someone who takes genuine pride in getting the details right. The pace is steady and the work is varied; no two weeks look the same. Must have a minimum of five years of design experience and a strong portfolio (not student work).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Brand Stewardship & Jobsite Branding

  • Understand, apply, and help evolve Samet’s brand standards across all
    touchpoints.
  • Design and maintain jobsite branding materials including windscreens, construction signage, PPE graphics, and barricade wraps — ensuring consistent brand presence across active projects.

Print & Digital Design

  • Create diverse print and digital projects: logos, identity collateral, posters,
brochures, flyers, advertisements, presentation materials, and project proposals.
  • Design internal communications graphics for SametNet (company intranet), Enplug digital screens, and departmental collateral.
  • Build and refine PowerPoint presentations and templates to support teams
    across the organization.

Career Fairs, Trade Shows & Events

  • Manage the design and production of all career fair and trade show materials, including print collateral, digital presentations, booth graphics, and promotional items.
  • Coordinate with vendors on timelines, specs, and proofing to ensure materials are accurate and delivered on schedule

Company Merchandise & Brand Stores

  • Design, source, and maintain Samet’s branded merchandise and online company stores.
  • Manage swag inventory, vendor relationships, and new product development for employee and client-facing merchandise programs.

Collaboration & Production

  • Work closely with the Sr. Graphic Designer and Creative Director, integrating art direction and feedback into designs.
  • Foster and sustain relationships with print vendors and other marketing
    resources.
  • Maintain organized project files with consistent naming conventions and proper asset management.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Microsoft Office 365 (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Canva, and WordPress.
  • Strong foundation in layout, typography, composition, and color theory — with a keen eye for detail and brand consistency.
  • Independent worker with initiative and design confidence who understands and applies the rules of design.
  • Highly organized with excellent multitasking and time-management capabilities; comfortable managing many concurrent projects with different timelines and stakeholders.
  • Open to incorporating AI tools, automation, and emerging digital platforms into design workflows.
  • Knowledgeable in digital and offset printing techniques, vendor management, and production best practices.
  • Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal.
  • Detail-oriented, with proficiency in both Mac and PC environments.
  • Positive, adaptable attitude with a collaborative mindset — comfortable in a fast-paced, team-oriented creative environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Graphic Design, Communications, or Marketing (Bachelor’s or
    Associate’s).
  • Minimum of 5 years of graphic design experience.
  • MUST provide a portfolio with two examples (minimum; no student work) of each of the following:
    – Logo design
    – Print collateral demonstrating layout, composition, and typography skills (brochure, flyer, poster, etc.)
    – Branding campaign (series of work with consistently branded elements)
    – Layout/art created in Adobe Illustrator
    – Enhanced or retouched images in Photoshop
    – Any favorite project that showcases a high level of design skill
