The Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Guelph invites applications for Small Animal Surgeons:

  • full-time 1-year contractually limited position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level
  • full-time 2-year contractually limited position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level

Applicants interested in a part-time appointment will be considered. The anticipated start date for these appointments is August 11, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.

Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario.  The applicant must be a Diplomate of the American (ACVS) or European (ECVS) College of Veterinary Surgeons. Applications may also be considered from candidates who have completed an ACVS/ECVS-approved residency training program and are eligible for examination by the ACVS or ECVS. A graduate research degree and experience in research and teaching are highly desirable. The ideal candidate should have strong skills in the clinical practice of small animal surgery in a team-based environment and outstanding teaching and communication skills. The successful candidate will work with five other board-certified surgeons and five small animal surgical residents covering orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. Much of your effort will be dedicated to teaching clinical surgery to DVM students and small animal surgical residents, including managing small animal patients and consultation in the Ontario Veterinary College-Health Sciences Centre (OVC-HSC). Orthopedic surgery experience will be regarded favourably, and the flexibility to support the soft tissue surgery service, when required, is considered an asset.  

The Department is supported by board-certified specialists in medicine, anesthesiology, critical care, diagnostic imaging, oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, nutrition, and cardiology to provide didactic and clinical instruction in small animal veterinary medicine and related disciplines to veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The OVC-HSC offers state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including but not limited to a 1.5 Tesla high field General Electric MRI, CT, digital radiology, PACS system, state-of-the-art ultrasonography, scintigraphy, arthroscopy, total hip replacement, video endoscopy, rehabilitation facilities, and a 24/7 fully staffed intensive care facility.  

On-call duties will be remunerated in addition to base salary, and the schedule will be shared with other surgery faculty members, necessitating some orthopedic and soft tissue surgery case management after hours. The candidate is expected to develop and participate in independent or collaborative research. The successful candidate will mentor and supervise small animal surgical residents and interns on a scheduled basis.
