Job description

Position Summary
The Corrections Education Student Assistant supports the delivery of postsecondary educational programming within the Vermont Department of Corrections (VDOC) facilities. This role provides on-site technical assistance to incarcerated students, ensures appropriate and secure use of technology, and supports faculty and program staff in maintaining an effective and professional learning environment within a correctional setting.
This position will work between 10-24 hours a week during the semester and the compensation is between $16.50 an $20 an hour, based on education level. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor and observe student access to computers in accordance with VDOC and CCV policies and procedures
  • Maintain accurate inventory and tracking of computer usage, including the check-in and check-out of SecureBooks and related equipment
  • Provide basic computer troubleshooting support (e.g., login issues, printing, device functionality)
  • Print, organize, and distribute course materials and instructional resources to students
  • Support faculty and program staff with classroom and lab setup as needed
  • Ensure compliance with all facility rules, security protocols, and confidentiality requirements
  • Maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries with students at all times
  • Communicate effectively with CPSEI staff and facility personnel regarding issues, concerns, or equipment needs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support program operations

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or college coursework preferred
  • Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with word processing, printing, and general troubleshooting
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in a correctional environment
  • Effective communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and correctional personnel

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in education, student support, or corrections-related environments
  • Experience supporting adult learners
  • Familiarity with learning management systems or educational technology

Conditions of Employment
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully clearing all Vermont Department of Corrections (VDOC) background and security checks.
  • Failure to obtain or maintain VDOC clearance will result in inability to perform essential job functions and may lead to termination of employment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed within a correctional facility setting
  • May require standing, walking, and monitoring student activity for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment (up to approximately 25 pounds)

Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Associate Director of Corrections Education or designee.
Additional Information: All new full-time employees and certain part-time employees will be subject to a fingerprint-supported criminal background check. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the satisfactory results of this check.
