What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structured Cabling Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structured Cabling Technician, you need a solid understanding of network cabling standards, installation techniques, and basic electrical knowledge, usually demonstrated through relevant experience or certifications like BICSI or FOA. Familiarity with tools such as cable testers, punch-down tools, and labeling systems is essential, as is the ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills for ensuring precise installations and collaborating with team members or clients. Structured Cabling Technicians often encounter challenges such as working in confined or hard-to-reach spaces, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring all installations comply with industry standards. Unexpected site conditions, like outdated infrastructure or limited access to building plans, can also pose difficulties. To prepare, technicians should familiarize themselves with building codes, develop strong problem-solving skills, and maintain open communication with project managers and other trades on-site to coordinate effectively and address issues proactively.

What are Structured Cabling Techs?

Structured Cabling Technicians are professionals who install, maintain, and troubleshoot the cabling infrastructure used for data, voice, and video communications in buildings. Their work ensures that networks and telecommunications systems operate efficiently and can handle current and future technology needs. Job description

K2 is building the largest and highest-power satellites ever flown, unlocking performance levels previously out of reach across every orbit. Backed by $450M from leading investors including Altimeter Capital, Redpoint Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alpine Space Ventures, and others - with an additional $500M in signed contracts across commercial and US government customers - we're mass-producing the highest-power satellite platforms ever built for missions from LEO to deep space.
The rise of heavy-lift launch vehicles is shifting the industry from an era of mass constraint to one of mass abundance, and we believe this new era demands a fundamentally different class of spacecraft. Engineered to survive the harshest radiation environments and to fully capitalize on today's and tomorrow's massive rockets, K2 satellites deliver unmatched capability at constellation scale and across multiple orbits.
With multiple launches planned through 2026 and 2027, we're Building Bigger to develop the solar system and become a Kardashev Type II (K2) civilization. If you are a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and you're excited about contributing to the success of a groundbreaking Series C space startup, we'd love for you to apply.
The Role
Not all heroes work behind a screen - some of them are pulling cable through a ceiling, racking servers in a closet, or making sure the all-hands presentation doesn't crash five minutes before the CEO walks in. As our IT Technician, you're the boots-on-the-ground force that keeps our physical technology environment running sharp. You'll build and deploy workstations, run structured cabling, maintain our conference rooms and AV systems, and be the friendly face employees see when technology gets in the way of their day. If you're the kind of person who gets satisfaction from a clean cable run, a perfectly imaged machine, or a conference room that just works - this role was built for you.
Responsibilities
  • Build, image, configure, and deploy desktop and laptop systems for new hires and hardware refresh cycles
  • Run and terminate structured cabling (Cat6/Cat6A) for workstations, access points, IP cameras, and other networked devices
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot conference room AV systems including displays, video conferencing equipment (Zoom Rooms, Teams Rooms), cameras, and speakers
  • Set up and support peripheral equipment - monitors, docking stations, printers, phones, and headsets
  • Perform physical rack installation of networking and server equipment; maintain clean and organized server rooms and IDF/MDF closets
  • Respond to on-site IT support requests, diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, and connectivity issues
  • Work with IT Leadership to build out and deploy an asset management system for current and future hardware
  • Support office moves, new office buildouts, and desk reconfigurations from an IT infrastructure perspective
  • Coordinate with vendors and facilities teams for equipment deliveries, installations, and warranty repairs
  • Document completed work, cable maps, and equipment configurations clearly and consistently

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in a hands-on IT support or field technician role
  • Demonstrated experience building and imaging Windows PCs and Macs and deploying them in a corporate environment, Iru and Intune MDM experience is a plus
  • Working knowledge of structured cabling standards and experience running, terminating, and testing Cat6/Cat6A cable
  • Familiarity with conference room AV systems and video conferencing platforms (Zoom Rooms, Microsoft Teams Rooms )
  • Solid understanding of networking basics - switches, patch panels, VLANs, Wi-Fi access points, and PoE devices
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting Microsoft 365, Windows 10/11, MacOS, and common business applications (Slack, Zoom, etc)
  • Comfortable working in tight spaces, on ladders, and in raised-floor or drop-ceiling environments
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple open tickets and hardware requests simultaneously
  • A customer-first attitude - you communicate clearly, follow up, and leave every interaction better than you found it
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (servers, monitors, UPS units)
  • Comfortable working on ladders and in overhead ceiling spaces
  • Ability to crouch, kneel, and work in confined spaces (under desks, in closets, in data rooms)

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly pay range for this non-exempt role is $28 - $43 + equity in the company
  • Salary will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience level
  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perks

If you don't meet 100% of the preferred skills and experience, we encourage you to still apply! Building a spacecraft unlike any other requires a team unlike any other and non-traditional career twists and turns are encouraged!
If you need a reasonable accommodation as part of your application for employment or interviews with us, please let us know.
