What are structural engineers?

Structural engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. Their primary responsibility is to make sure structures can withstand loads and forces, including wind, earthquakes, and the weight of occupants. They work closely with architects and construction teams to create safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. Structural engineers use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to solve complex engineering problems.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges related to balancing structural requirements with aesthetic or functional goals. Coordinating design changes, ensuring compliance with diverse codes, and managing communication across teams are common hurdles. Effective collaboration and proactive problem-solving are essential to meet project deadlines and ensure a cohesive final design. Developing strong interpersonal and project management skills will help structural engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, and building information modeling (BIM) tools is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and ensuring design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing safe, efficient structures and delivering successful construction projects.

What is the difference between Structural vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, licensure (PE)Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, licensure (PE)
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building frameworks, bridges, and other structuresWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, dams, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsBroader industry application including transportation, urban development, and environmental projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for project scope and specializationMore general, encompassing various civil projects

While both Structural and Civil Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure, Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on infrastructure projects such as roads, water systems, and urban development. The choice depends on your specific career interests and project focus.

Job description

Quanta Power Solutions brings together the industry-leading capabilities and resources of Quanta's operating companies to deliver complete EPC solutions. Our integrated approach spans power generation, battery energy storage, renewables, transmission, substation, and underground infrastructure — from concept to commissioning, we execute complex power infrastructure projects with the speed, certainty, and operational excellence our customers depend on.

At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution — and we're building a team that shares that commitment.

Quanta Power Solutions is seeking a talented Structural Engineer to support innovative EPC projects across the power and energy sector, including gas turbines, renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), substations, transmission systems, and related industrial infrastructure. This role is responsible for designing and analyzing structural systems that support safe, efficient, and reliable facilities for critical energy infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in structural engineering, industrial facility design, and multidisciplinary coordination within EPC or heavy industrial environments. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to transformative projects that help power the future.

  • Design and analyze structural systems utilizing steel, reinforced concrete, and composite materials for power generation and industrial infrastructure projects
  • Develop structural calculations, engineering analyses, and design packages for buildings, equipment foundations, pipe racks, platforms, substations, and transmission support structures
  • Review structural designs for accuracy, constructability, code compliance, and alignment with project requirements
  • Evaluate vendor drawings, fabrication documents, and technical submittals to ensure compatibility with project specifications and structural requirements
  • Prepare technical specifications, design criteria, and procurement support documentation for structural systems and materials
  • Coordinate closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, piping, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure integrated project execution
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, installation, commissioning, and project closeout activities
  • Conduct site visits, field assessments, and structural evaluations as needed to support project execution and retrofit initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes and standards including IBC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and OSHA requirements
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability assessments, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to support team development and engineering excellence
  • Support proposal development, project planning, and engineering estimates as needed
  • Employee may be required to visit job sites, field offices, and customer locations

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering focus
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Minimum 7+ years of structural engineering experience, preferably within EPC, power generation, utility, or heavy industrial environments
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, industrial facility design, and construction practices
  • Proficiency with structural codes and standards including IBC, ASCE, AISC, and ACI
  • Experience using structural analysis software such as STAAD, SAP2000, or equivalent platforms
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills

Preferred Experience

  • Gas turbine, renewable energy, BESS, substation, or transmission infrastructure project experience
