Structural Intern information

What are Structural Interns?

Structural Interns are students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of professional structural engineers to gain practical experience in the field. Their duties typically include assisting with the design and analysis of building structures, preparing drawings and reports, and performing site visits. This internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to industry standards, software, and construction practices. It helps interns build foundational skills necessary for a career as a structural engineer.

What is the difference between Structural Intern vs Civil Engineering Intern?

AspectStructural InternCivil Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Civil or Structural EngineeringTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Civil Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentFocus on structural design, analysis, and materials testingBroader civil projects including transportation, water, and infrastructure
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in structural engineering firms, construction companies, and consulting firmsUsed across various civil engineering sectors including government agencies and private firms

The main difference between a Structural Intern and a Civil Engineering Intern lies in their focus areas. Structural Interns concentrate on structural design and analysis, while Civil Engineering Interns have a broader scope covering various civil projects. Both roles are valuable entry points into civil engineering careers, with Structural Internships specifically preparing candidates for structural engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Intern, you need a solid understanding of structural engineering principles, coursework in civil or structural engineering, and progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools such as SAP2000 or ETABS is typically required. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you stand out in this position. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate designs, collaborating with project teams, and ensuring safe, efficient structural solutions.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Structural Intern typically expect during their internship?

As a Structural Intern, you can expect to assist with tasks such as preparing CAD drawings, performing basic structural calculations, and supporting senior engineers with design and documentation. Interns often help with site visits, report preparation, and reviewing construction documents. You’ll work closely with both engineers and drafters, gaining exposure to a variety of project types like commercial buildings, bridges, or residential developments. This hands-on experience helps you build practical skills, understand industry standards, and see how multidisciplinary teams collaborate to deliver successful projects.
