Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Structural tig welders can potentially earn $300,000 annually with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-paying industries such as oil and gas or construction. Achieving this income level often requires working long hours, overtime, or in remote locations, and holding advanced certifications. Such earnings are uncommon for entry-level or standard welding positions.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Structural TIG welders can earn around $50 an hour or more, especially with experience, certifications, and in high-demand industries such as construction or manufacturing. Wages vary based on location, project complexity, and skill level, with specialized or senior roles often paying higher rates. Strong knowledge of TIG welding techniques and safety standards is essential for these positions.

Are structural welders in demand?

Structural tig welders are in demand due to ongoing construction, infrastructure projects, and manufacturing needs. Skilled welders with certifications and experience in structural steel are often sought after in the construction and fabrication industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Tig Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Tig Welder, you need expertise in TIG welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often backed by a welding certification or completion of an apprenticeship. Familiarity with TIG welding machines, various metals (such as stainless steel and aluminum), and safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for producing strong, precise welds and collaborating on construction projects. These skills ensure the structural integrity, safety, and quality of welded frameworks in demanding environments.

Both Structural Tig Welders and Pipe Welders require similar certifications and often work in construction or industrial settings. The main difference lies in their focus: Structural Tig Welders specialize in welding steel frameworks and structures, while Pipe Welders focus on pipelines and pressure vessels. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Where do Tig welders make the most money?

Tig welders tend to earn higher wages in regions with a strong manufacturing, aerospace, or oil and gas industry presence, especially in areas with high demand for precision welding. Factors such as experience, certifications, and working in specialized environments can also influence earning potential.

What are Structural TIG Welders?

Structural TIG Welders are skilled tradespeople who use Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding techniques to join and repair metal components, specifically in structural frameworks such as buildings, bridges, and other large structures. They work primarily with metals like steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, ensuring strong and precise welds that meet safety and engineering standards. TIG welding is valued for its precision and clean results, making it ideal for structural applications where strength and durability are critical. Structural TIG Welders must read blueprints, operate welding equipment safely, and inspect finished welds for quality.

What are some common challenges faced by Structural Tig Welders when working on large-scale construction projects?

Structural Tig Welders often encounter challenges such as maintaining high-quality welds in awkward or confined positions, working in variable weather conditions, and ensuring weld integrity on thick or complex materials. Collaboration with engineers, fabricators, and quality inspectors is frequent to ensure compliance with safety and structural standards. Adapting to different project specifications and staying current with welding codes are also essential aspects of the role.

Job description

This is a job shop welding and fabrication position — NOT a production welding role. We fabricate custom, one-off and short-run sheet metal and structural components. If you are looking for repetitive, fixture-based, production welding, this is not that job.

We are looking for an experienced Welder/Fabricator who can read prints, fit parts, and work through a job from start to finish with minimal supervision.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • MIG welding (GMAW) carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel
  • TIG welding (GTAW) as needed (TIG welding is a plus)
  • Fit, tack, weld, and finish custom, non-repetitive assemblies
  • Fabricate sheet metal and structural components from prints
  • Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and job travelers
  • Measure, layout, and verify parts throughout the job
  • Grind and clean welds as required by job specifications
  • Use standard shop tools (grinders, saws, drills, etc.)
  • Maintain weld quality, appearance, and structural integrity
  • Follow shop safety, quality, and scheduling requirements
  • Keep your work area clean and organized

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience in a job shop welding/fabrication environment
  • Not a production-only welder
  • Strong MIG welding experience
  • Experience welding carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel
  • Ability to read prints and weld symbols without assistance
  • Strong fit-up, layout, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working on changing jobs and priorities
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and be on your feet for extended periods

Preferred (Nice to Have)

  • TIG welding experience
  • Welding certifications (AWS or similar)
  • Experience working from incomplete or evolving prints
  • Experience grinding welds for appearance or coating

Skill Verification

Your welding and fabrication skills will be tested during the interview process.

Applicants must bring their required personal welding equipment to complete a hands-on weld/fabrication test.

You should be proficient in:

  • GD&T
  • Tape Measure Reading
  • Welding Setups for Production
  • Blueprint Reading

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • MIG Welder
  • TIG Welder
  • 2D Drawings
