Job description

The Structural Steel Estimator prepares accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. This role reviews project documents to determine material, labor, and related costs while working closely with sales, project management, engineering, and production teams to support successful bids and project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project scope.

Perform material takeoffs for structural steel and miscellaneous metals.

Prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, coatings, freight, and subcontracted work.

Solicit, review, and analyze vendor and subcontractor pricing.

Develop bid summaries including clarifications, exclusions, and assumptions.

Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and detailers to address scope questions.

Track bid schedules and ensure timely bid submissions.

Maintain historical cost data and estimating records.

Participate in bid reviews and project handoff meetings.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED/ degree in construction management, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience estimating structural steel fabrication and/or erection projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
  • Knowledge of steel materials, fabrication processes, connections, and coatings.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field

Familiarity with AISC standards and industry practices

Understanding of shop, detailing, and erection processes

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer

Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds

Visual ability to review detailed drawings and documents

Office-based position with occasional shop or jobsite visits

Standard business hours with project-driven deadlines

Exposure to fabrication and construction environments during site visits
