About the Role

As a Structural/Misc. Metals Estimator, you will support our rapidly growing operations as a full-service Specialty Industrial Contractor. You will be responsible for estimating structural and miscellaneous metals in a wide variety of industry, with a wide variety of materials/solutions. You will also need to be keyed into the industry leading fabrication technology that we have in place to understand Doral’s capabilities in this field. In addition to our strong core business in Milwaukee and the surrounding areas, we work nationwide so there may be periodic traveling for jobsite walkthroughs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Stay in constant communication with Business Development, Operations, and Project Management to understand current and future work opportunities.
  2. Create and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors and subcontractors.
  3. Prepare a detailed scope of work for each job to be quoted from an on-site project review and gathering all bid documents provided by the customer.
  4. Provide a detailed estimate for each job including cost of materials, drawing/detailing, labor, equipment, travel expenses, subcontractors, permits, etc.
  5. Work closely with steel suppliers and Doral Purchasing Agent to understand best price and lead times available to meet project requirements. Understanding job specific material specifications/certifications is critical to facilitate the most accurate material estimate available.
  6. All contract language must be reviewed prior to completing and sending a quote; this includes schedules, subcontractor agreements, payment terms, insurance/bonding requirements, liquidated damages, etc.
  7. When you bid and are awarded a project, you will have a handoff meeting with the project manager and fabrication department to review the job scope, bid, hours, materials, etc. This is a critical meeting and you as the estimator will be responsible for facilitating this meeting to explain the requirements and specifics of the job.
  8. Once a project is awarded you will coordinate with the fabrication department regarding material ordering and availability.  
  9. Coordinate with Doral Purchasing Agent, vendors and subcontractors to get all necessary materials and services ordered. 
  10. Be an active resource/team member during the project and be readily available to support the job as necessary.
  11. Actively monitor the schedule and financial performance of the job related to the detailed scope of work and estimate- and raise concerns immediately to the project manager and your manager.
  12. Make constant adjustments to your estimating strategy based on past performance of jobs and be very aware and informed of new technology and efficiency gains in the fabrication department.
  13. Be an active participant in post-job review to understand contributing factors to successes/failures of jobs as it pertains to future estimating.
  14. Full project management for 2-3 projects a year to get a holistic understanding of the estimating/project management cycle.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Construction Management and/or 3-5 years of industry experience in a Project Management or Estimating position.
  • Structural Steel / Miscellaneous metals estimating experience is required.
  • Demonstrated Success in prior roles/projects. Project portfolio/examples preferred.
  • Experienced with a PC and Microsoft Office, ability to use CAD or Tekla is a plus. Experience with estimating software a plus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills required. 
  • Ability to remain cool under pressure and handle multiple jobs/responsibilities at the same time.
