What is the difference between Structural Engineering vs Civil Engineering?
| Aspect | Structural Engineering | Civil Engineering |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Requires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE license often preferred | Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Focuses on designing and analyzing structural systems for buildings, bridges, and towers | Encompasses a broader range of infrastructure projects including roads, water systems, and urban planning |
| Industry Usage | Specialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firms | Used across construction, transportation, urban development, and environmental sectors |
Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing and analyzing structures to ensure safety and stability. Civil engineering covers a broader scope of infrastructure projects. While structural engineers concentrate on the integrity of individual structures, civil engineers handle a wide range of infrastructure systems. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project focus and scope differ significantly.

Job description
About the Position
We're seeking a Roadway, Bridge and Guideway Engineer to support large, heavy-civil infrastructure programs, including highways, roads, bridges, transit (both rail and bus), international airports, and water/wastewater projects delivered through both traditional and alternative methods. Your primary focus will be providing construction inspection and quality assurance oversight for roadway, bridge, guideway, and related structural elements on a large-scale passenger rail infrastructure program, serving as the owner's representative in the field to verify that constructed work meets approved plans, specifications, and safety standards.
This is a long-term, full-time, on-site position located in the Central Valley region of California. Note: This position requires 100% travel to field sites within the designated area.Â
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform daily field inspections of bridges, guideways, elevated structures, retaining walls, foundations, and related civil infrastructure to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Monitor construction activities involving structural concrete, reinforcing steel, prestressed and post-tensioned systems, structural steel erection, bearings, expansion joints, precast elements, falsework, and shoring operations.
- Evaluate completed work against project quality requirements and applicable industry standards, and coordinate corrective actions with contractors, resident engineers, and quality assurance staff when non-conforming elements are identified.
- Review and develop inspection and testing reports, material certifications, placement records, and quality control documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Document inspection findings, deficiencies, field observations, and project progress through photographs and electronic reporting systems.
- Witness and record field testing, material sampling, structural load testing, and acceptance testing activities.
- Coordinate inspection schedules with specialty inspectors, survey personnel, utility representatives, and other project stakeholders.
- Verify implementation of approved traffic control, environmental compliance, and construction safety requirements within active inspection areas.
- Participate in field coordination meetings and progress reviews to resolve technical and construction issues.
- Support punch list development, substantial completion inspections, final acceptance documentation, and record verification during project closeout.
Attributes
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a firm commitment to safety, quality, and accountability.
- Collaborative mindset that builds trust and effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving ability when evaluating field conditions and non-conforming work.
- Ability to work effectively in active construction environments and adapt to shifting project priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, engineering technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles in accordance with California law and have the ability to travel to and between active construction sites.
- 5+ years of bridge, guideway, railroad, or heavy civil construction inspection experience.
- Experience performing construction inspections and documenting field activities through detailed inspection records and reports.
- Working knowledge of bridge, guideway, railroad, and heavy civil construction methods, structural systems, engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Ability to interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, construction specifications, and inspection procedures.
- Knowledge of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) principles and construction inspection practices.
- Knowledge of construction safety, traffic control, and environmental compliance requirements applicable to active rail and highway construction sites.
- Experience with industry standard project and construction management software (e.g., Primavera P6, TILOS, Procore, Unifier, FieldManager, or similar platforms).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365 (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in civil engineering, construction management, and engineering technology.
- Certifications such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector, AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or equivalent structural inspection certification, along with an OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
- 10+ years of bridge, guideway, or railroad construction inspection experience on large transportation infrastructure programs.
- Experience on passenger, commuter, or freight rail construction programs.
- Knowledge of AASHTO, AREMA, and applicable state DOT bridge design and construction standards.
- Familiarity or proficiency with Microsoft Power BI or other dashboard KPI reporting software.
