Job description

Overview:

A recognized practitioner and licensed engineer who possesses strong technical abilities and manages implementation documentation. Uses the firm's resources (people, processes, and tools) and assignments with proficiency, fluency and aptitude. Teaches and mentors staff and effectively embodies and expresses the firm's values and mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates structural project team efforts to facilitate effective execution of structural engineering design and the delivery of structural implementation documents
  • Leads early phase effort for determination of most appropriate structural framing system(s)
  • Establishes structural project criteria including building code, fire-rating, gravity/lateral loads and unique requirements of the project
  • Performs effectively as a senior team member during design and/or construction phases
  • Prepares and/or reviews structural specifications for projects at each phase of delivery
  • Maintains active awareness of the production schedule for responsible project(s)
  • Establishes credibility through project management skills
  • Effectively manages structural CA effort including engineering site visitation, field report documentation, submittal review, response to project RFI's, and review of structural change order requests
  • Reviews implementation documents at key phases/intervals for accuracy and completeness.
  • Supervises junior project team members, both engineering and drafting staff. Delegates appropriate tasks, answers questions, and holds junior project team members accountable.
  • Reviews staff performance relative to project contributions on a regular basis in a constructive manner to strengthen team(s)
  • Utilizes standard engineering practices and techniques to adjust and correlate data; recognizes and resolves discrepancies in results
  • Responsible for communication with other disciplines, clients, vendors and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements
  • Participates in and leads team meetings to discuss project issues, coordination with other disciplines and technical issues
  • Consistently documents project meetings and telephone conversations
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of products and materials available on the market
  • Travel will be required

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Accredited professional degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or related field
  • Typically 7+ years of experience

Licenses and Certifications

  • Professional engineering or structural engineering licensure required (structural engineering licensure preferred)
  • Ability to be licensed in multiple states preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Advanced - expert-level experience, knowledge or skills

Intermediate - experience, knowledge or skills required to produce high-quality solutions or work

Basic - familiar with primary concepts or capabilities and may perform elementary functions depending on role

  • Advanced understanding on the use of Revit and BIM in the delivery of implementation documents required
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office Suite required
  • Advanced knowledge of building codes and material design standards required
  • Advanced knowledge in select structural systems required
  • Advanced technical knowledge through a combination of academic experience, work experience and continuing education required
  • Basic knowledge of project management tools (Vision, Portfolio, etc.) preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge of integrated design, engineering building systems and QA/QC process required
  • Advanced organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time required
  • Advanced ability to exercise judgment and discretion, set priorities and manage competing demands required
  • Advanced ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing required
  • Advanced ability to problem solve and apply innovative solutions required
  • Advanced ability to work and encourage collaboration in a team environment required
  • Advanced ability to work on multiple projects at the same time required
  • Advance ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality required

Base Salary Range: $99k - $141k annually - Chicago and Washington DC locations only.
