What is structural engineering?

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Structural engineers work to make sure that structures can withstand the loads and forces they encounter, such as gravity, wind, earthquakes, and human use. Their work involves selecting appropriate materials, creating blueprints, and sometimes inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with design specifications. Structural engineering plays a vital role in the safety and durability of the built environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (such as a PE license). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD) and familiarity with building codes are essential technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients. These skills ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of structures while facilitating teamwork and compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges structural engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams on multidisciplinary projects. One common challenge is aligning structural requirements with architectural aesthetics and project budgets without compromising safety or functionality. Effective communication and early involvement in the design process are key to resolving conflicts and ensuring structural integrity. Additionally, adapting to changing project scopes and coordinating with multiple stakeholders can require strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing and analyzing structures to ensure safety and stability. Civil engineering covers a broader scope of infrastructure projects. While structural engineers concentrate on the integrity of individual structures, civil engineers handle a wide range of infrastructure systems. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project focus and scope differ significantly.

Job description

Job Title: Structural Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on performing forensic structural engineering field work to document as-built conditions and assess damage to structural systems caused by natural events and human-induced factors. The Structural Engineer applies deep knowledge of structural behavior, building codes, and construction practices to determine causes of damage and develop clear, practical repair recommendations. The position requires frequent collaboration with clients, code officials, and contractors, as well as the preparation of detailed technical reports. The engineer manages multiple projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality work on time and within budget while traveling nationwide to support investigations, often in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations to document as-built conditions and damage to structural systems resulting from natural events such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events, as well as human-induced causes such as design and construction errors or omissions.
  • Perform forensic evaluations of structural systems to determine the cause and origin of damage, using building codes, technical knowledge of structural behavior, and understanding of construction practices.
  • Develop clear, technically sound repair scope recommendations for damaged structures, ensuring proposed solutions align with applicable codes and industry standards.
  • Review, interpret, and evaluate design drawings, specifications, and related documentation to support structural assessments and forensic analyses.
  • Prepare detailed written reports that clearly communicate findings, analyses, conclusions, and recommended repairs to clients and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with clients to explain technical findings, manage expectations, and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Interface with building code officials and contractors to discuss code compliance issues, structural concerns, and recommended remediation strategies.
  • Manage multiple project assignments simultaneously, ensuring that each project is executed efficiently, completed on schedule, and delivered within budget.
  • Provide litigation support as needed, including preparation of technical documentation and participation in expert testimony at depositions, trials, mediations, and arbitration proceedings, when required.
  • Travel throughout the United States, often on short notice, to perform onsite evaluations, particularly in areas affected by natural disasters.
  • Access roofs and other elevated areas safely by carrying and climbing ladders, navigating steep-slope roofing up to a 6:12 pitch, and using scaffolds and lifts as needed for inspections.
  • Support the retention and development of client relationships by delivering high-quality service, maintaining responsiveness, and contributing to a positive client experience.
  • Collaborate with internal team members and external consultants, including structural, civil, and MEP professionals, to coordinate project efforts and share technical expertise.
  • Maintain strong written and oral communication standards in all deliverables, including reports, correspondence, and client presentations.
  • Adhere to national building and construction codes and stay current with relevant standards, including ICC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and NDS, when performing analyses and developing recommendations.
