Job Title: Structural Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on performing forensic structural engineering field work to document as-built conditions and assess damage to structural systems caused by natural events and human-induced factors. The Structural Engineer applies deep knowledge of structural behavior, building codes, and construction practices to determine causes of damage and develop clear, practical repair recommendations. The position requires frequent collaboration with clients, code officials, and contractors, as well as the preparation of detailed technical reports. The engineer manages multiple projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality work on time and within budget while traveling nationwide to support investigations, often in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field investigations to document as-built conditions and damage to structural systems resulting from natural events such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events, as well as human-induced causes such as design and construction errors or omissions.
- Perform forensic evaluations of structural systems to determine the cause and origin of damage, using building codes, technical knowledge of structural behavior, and understanding of construction practices.
- Develop clear, technically sound repair scope recommendations for damaged structures, ensuring proposed solutions align with applicable codes and industry standards.
- Review, interpret, and evaluate design drawings, specifications, and related documentation to support structural assessments and forensic analyses.
- Prepare detailed written reports that clearly communicate findings, analyses, conclusions, and recommended repairs to clients and other stakeholders.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with clients to explain technical findings, manage expectations, and maintain strong working relationships.
- Interface with building code officials and contractors to discuss code compliance issues, structural concerns, and recommended remediation strategies.
- Manage multiple project assignments simultaneously, ensuring that each project is executed efficiently, completed on schedule, and delivered within budget.
- Provide litigation support as needed, including preparation of technical documentation and participation in expert testimony at depositions, trials, mediations, and arbitration proceedings, when required.
- Travel throughout the United States, often on short notice, to perform onsite evaluations, particularly in areas affected by natural disasters.
- Access roofs and other elevated areas safely by carrying and climbing ladders, navigating steep-slope roofing up to a 6:12 pitch, and using scaffolds and lifts as needed for inspections.
- Support the retention and development of client relationships by delivering high-quality service, maintaining responsiveness, and contributing to a positive client experience.
- Collaborate with internal team members and external consultants, including structural, civil, and MEP professionals, to coordinate project efforts and share technical expertise.
- Maintain strong written and oral communication standards in all deliverables, including reports, correspondence, and client presentations.
- Adhere to national building and construction codes and stay current with relevant standards, including ICC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and NDS, when performing analyses and developing recommendations.
