What is structural engineering?

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Structural engineers work to make sure that structures can withstand the loads and forces they encounter, such as gravity, wind, earthquakes, and human use. Their work involves selecting appropriate materials, creating blueprints, and sometimes inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with design specifications. Structural engineering plays a vital role in the safety and durability of the built environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (such as a PE license). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD) and familiarity with building codes are essential technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients. These skills ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of structures while facilitating teamwork and compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges structural engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams on multidisciplinary projects. One common challenge is aligning structural requirements with architectural aesthetics and project budgets without compromising safety or functionality. Effective communication and early involvement in the design process are key to resolving conflicts and ensuring structural integrity. Additionally, adapting to changing project scopes and coordinating with multiple stakeholders can require strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering
CredentialsRequires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE license often preferredRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing structural systems for buildings, bridges, and towersEncompasses a broader range of infrastructure projects including roads, water systems, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsUsed across construction, transportation, urban development, and environmental sectors

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing and analyzing structures to ensure safety and stability. Civil engineering covers a broader scope of infrastructure projects. While structural engineers concentrate on the integrity of individual structures, civil engineers handle a wide range of infrastructure systems. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project focus and scope differ significantly.

Job description

This role's primary purpose is to provide structural engineering for various cooling tower projects spanning multiple product lines including Crossflow and Counterflow and utilizing several materials (e.g., concrete, wood, steel and fiberglass). The incumbent is responsible for using conceptual product ideas and performing necessary research, engineering, and project management to bring finished products to the marketplace. This role entails developing structurally sound solutions with drawings, engineering specifications, bills of material, quality plans and assembly procedures for new products. This role is also responsible for performing tests to verify that design functions perform appropriately. Further, the incumbent must perform design calculations and evaluate the structural integrity of every aspect of each new product in order to meet all structural codes, design loads, and practical assembly standards and processes. This role also involves performing technical bid evaluations, assisting in the vendor selection process, and expediting vendor manufacturing and delivery in order to meet project deadlines. The incumbent must be able to plan one's own work and create one's own timelines to complete assignments. The incumbent may also be responsible for maintenance of current tower lines, design of new tower lines (including research, development and testing), field inspections of towers, and writing engineering specifications for tower lines or components. Key criteria include technical skills, sound engineering and business judgment, strong communication skills, broad knowledge of the industry, initiative and innovation, and the ability to simultaneously keep track of multiple jobs. In this position, the incumbent will use established procedures and work under immediate supervision to perform assigned tasks. This position works on assignments under general supervision and direction, follows established procedures and has work reviewed by more senior level engineers.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform engineering analyses and calculations
  • Manage projects and schedule tasks
  • Review, approve, and control vendor-supplied engineering documents
  • Provide support to site erection and commissioning teams
  • Execute project-specific document control processes
  • Develop solutions to problems and new designs
  • Write engineering specifications for tower lines and components
  • Assist internal sales team

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering required
  • MS degree in Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering preferred

Skills:
  • Skill at hand-sketching 2- and 3-D objects
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • PE Preferred
  • Knowledge of national building codes
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of cooling tower design and structural engineering preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated competence in utilizing cooling tower design tools and structural engineering methods preferred but not required
  • Detailed knowledge of multiple product lines and specifications
  • Accountability for one's own work, but requiring daily or weekly oversight and coaching
  • Highly creative
  • Strong ability to visualize complex spatial geometry
  • Passionate about product optimization and improvement
  • Persistent and patient enough to work on projects for which results are not seen for long periods of time
