What Do Structural Engineers Do?

Structural engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the design, construction, and repair of many different types of structures. The job of a structural engineer is to act as a consultant to architects and contractors throughout the construction project, offering expert advice on technical problems. Structural engineers are typically contracted on projects involving sports arenas, bridges, large buildings, or any other weight-bearing structure. On a day-to-day basis, a structural engineer may assist the head architect with initial layout and design of a structure, including plans for maintenance or overall remodels. They calculate loads, such as wind, snow, and earthquake forces, to determine which structural system is safest. Some structural engineers specialize in demolition and are responsible for ensuring projects are carried out safely and without damage to surrounding structures. Others specialize in oil drilling machinery, aircraft and shipbuilding vehicle design, or temporary structure builds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of building projects while facilitating collaboration with architects, contractors, and clients.

What are some common challenges Structural Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers to deliver integrated building designs. One common challenge is balancing aesthetic or functional requirements from architects with structural safety and code compliance. Effective communication and coordination are essential to resolve conflicts, manage project timelines, and ensure that structural solutions align with the broader vision of the project. Structural Engineers should be proactive in attending coordination meetings and using collaborative design tools to streamline teamwork.

What are structural engineers?

Structural engineers are specialized professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. They work to make sure these structures can withstand various forces, such as gravity, wind, and earthquakes, while remaining safe and functional. Structural engineers use mathematics, physics, and material science to select appropriate construction materials and methods. Their expertise is essential in the planning and construction phases, as well as in inspecting existing structures for safety and compliance.

Are structural engineers paid well?

Structural engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. They often work in design firms, construction, or consulting, and higher levels of certification and specialized skills can lead to increased pay.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE licenseRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building structures, often in office and construction sitesWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems, in offices and field sites
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and structural design firmsBroader industry scope including transportation, environmental, and urban planning

Structural engineers primarily focus on designing and analyzing building frameworks to ensure safety and stability, while civil engineers work on a wider range of infrastructure projects. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities and project types differ.

Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials that are sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.
As the Structural Engineering Lead at our company, you will be responsible for creating infrastructure designs for our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling processes and primary resource extraction technologies. This role will involve collaborating with our internal engineering team, technical programs, construction, and plant operations, as well as various external and internal experts, to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about creating and implementing efficient concrete, steel, and site infrastructure in a dynamic and high-performance environment. The ideal candidate will be a skilled problem-solver, responsible for producing design deliverables and serving as the owner's engineer for third-party design projects. This includes assessing both greenfield and brownfield projects.
Requirements
  • Lead the end-to-end structural design for "first of kind" battery recycling and primary metal manufacturing facilities. Evaluate, determine and design the most efficient structural systems (e.g., pre-engineered metal buildings, reinforced concrete, or heavy structural steel) based on factory requirements and local site conditions.
  • Collaborate directly with Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to integrate complex industrial systems into cohesive site plans via review of equipment submittals or generalized performance expectations.
  • Manage the structural scope from initial feasibility studies and schematic design to construction administration and final close-out.
  • Perform calculations around seismic, weather, and geotechnical factors to ensure safe and lasting infrastructure designs.
  • Draft and develop standards to support reliable adherence to code and company standards.
  • Support prototyping and piloting system designs by providing technical feedback and continuous improvement ideas through rapid fabrication and modification.

Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Background in Civil & Structural Engineering
  • Nevada Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • 5+ years of engineering/design experience
  • Thorough understanding of International Building Code (IBC) 2024 with ability to interpret ASCE / SEI and ACI codes
  • Knowledge of Autodesk CAD programs (Civil3D, Revit)
  • Ability to interpret design drawings such as equipment General Arrangements (GA)
  • Ability to positively collaborate in a fast-paced team environment and follow company values
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to executives, managers, and peers

Preferred Qualifications
  • Nevada Licensed Structural Professional Engineer (SE) and thorough understanding of applicable codes.
  • Chemical or Mechanical industry background (High Volume Manufacturing, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret design drawings such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
  • Experience interfacing with Solidworks and / or Fabrication-level detailed designs
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Experience in technical bid evaluations, material takeoffs, and civil / structural project cost estimating
  • Experience managing staff augmentation resources to complete a project

Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Company-sponsored health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Parental Leave
  • Company-sponsored Employee Assistance Program
  • Stock options
  • 401(K)
  • Flexible paid time off

Expected Pay Range
$115k - $175k per year.
Compensation for this position may vary based on a number of individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
