Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a Structural Engineer, Subject Matter Expert (SME) for our Power Division. The successful candidate will provide expert structural engineering support, technical governance, design oversight, quality assurance, and mentorship for major infrastructure projects. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring technical excellence, code compliance, constructability, and innovation across a broad range of projects, including substations, transmission lines, renewable energy developments, and other critical infrastructure.
This is an existing strategic technical leadership position for which we are actively recruiting. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge. Essential Job Functions:
  • Serve as the technical authority and subject matter expert for structural engineering design and analysis across Power Division projects.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to structural engineers and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Review, approve, and oversee structural engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Lead the structural design of steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and foundation systems for substations, transmission facilities, renewable energy projects, and industrial infrastructure.
  • Perform and oversee structural analyses, seismic assessments, wind load evaluations, equipment support structure design, and foundation design.
  • Develop engineering solutions for complex structural challenges and provide recommendations to project teams and clients.
  • Establish and maintain structural design criteria, technical standards, best practices, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Conduct peer reviews and independent design reviews of engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Support business development activities, including proposal preparation, technical presentations, project scoping, and client engagement.
  • Collaborate with electrical, civil, geotechnical, mechanical, and project management teams to ensure integrated project execution.
  • Provide expert support during construction, including responses to requests for information (RFIs), site inspections, design clarifications, and issue resolution.
  • Participate in technical committees, industry organizations, and code development initiatives to maintain awareness of industry advancements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, engineering methodologies, and design tools to improve project delivery and technical performance.
  • Support project managers in defining scope, schedules, resource requirements, and technical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering.
• Minimum of 20 years of progressive structural engineering experience, preferably within consulting engineering environments.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) in Canada and/or the United States.
• Demonstrated expertise in structural design for utility substations, transmission lines, wind farms, hydro dams, battery storage facilities, solar farms, and/or other power related infrastructure.
• Extensive knowledge of applicable structural design codes and standards, including CSA, AISC, ACI, ASCE, IBC, NBCC, and related industry standards.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects and providing technical oversight.
• Strong proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as STAAD.Pro, RISA, SAP2000, PLS-TOWER, LPile, MFAD, ETABS, SAFE, or equivalent tools.
• Experience with seismic analysis, dynamic loading, equipment support structures, foundation systems and power related building design.
• Strong understanding of constructability, material performance, and lifecycle considerations.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and client presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and contribute to professional development initiatives.
• Experience preparing technical specifications, design criteria documents, engineering studies, and construction support documentation.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Willingness to travel periodically for client meetings, site visits, inspections, and project support activities.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit or stand as required and remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the workday.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, including continuous operation of a computer and other standard office equipment such as calculators, copiers, and printers.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
  • The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting.
  • Periodic travel may be required and could involve limited exposure to extreme temperatures. Travel may include air travel, during which the employee may be required to remain seated for extended periods.

The salary range for this position is $145,000 to $195,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
