Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer with a strong background in structural design and a minimum of 5 years dedicated to existing conditions assessments and evaluations of buildings and infrastructure. In this role, you will lead the assessment, analysis, and rehabilitation of existing structures while also contributing to new design projects. The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of structural engineering experience, a deep understanding of building codes, and proven expertise in diagnosing structural issues, preparing condition reports, and developing repair/retrofit solutions.

If you excel at evaluating aging infrastructure, performing forensic investigations, and delivering practical, code-compliant recommendations, we want to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structural condition assessments of existing buildings, parking structures, and other infrastructure, including visual inspections, non-destructive testing, and documentation of as-built conditions.

  • Perform detailed structural analysis and load evaluations for existing structures to determine capacity, identify deficiencies, and recommend repairs, reinforcements, or retrofits.

  • Develop existing conditions reports, feasibility studies, and rehabilitation designs in compliance with current building codes (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, etc.).

  • Conduct forensic investigations of structural distress, failures, or damage caused by age, environmental factors, seismic/wind events, or construction issues.

  • Prepare construction documents, calculations, drawings, and specifications for structural repairs, additions, modifications, and adaptive reuse projects.

  • Collaborate with architects, owners, contractors, and other engineering disciplines on renovation, restoration, and expansion projects.

  • Review and seal structural drawings and calculations as the Engineer of Record.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project team.

  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and client communications while ensuring quality control and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited program (Master's preferred).

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (Structural Engineering license/SE in Illinois).

  • Minimum 10+ years of professional experience in structural engineering.

  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience with existing conditions assessments, condition surveys, forensic evaluations, or rehabilitation/retrofit projects for buildings and structures.

  • Strong proficiency in structural analysis software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, RISA, or equivalent) and design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam).

  • In-depth knowledge of building codes, standards, and material behavior (concrete, steel, masonry, wood).

  • Experience with site investigations, non-destructive testing methods, and preparing detailed condition assessment reports.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and interface effectively with clients.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing technical reports and presentations.

  • Willingness to perform field inspections (travel as needed).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with seismic retrofitting, historic building preservation, or adaptive reuse projects.

  • Familiarity with sustainable design practices and resilient structural solutions.

  • Project management experience or PMP certification.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience

  • Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, PTO, etc.)

  • Collaborative work environment with opportunities for leadership and growth
