What is a structural engineer in training?

A Structural Engineer In Training (EIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed an accredited engineering degree and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. EITs work under the supervision of licensed structural engineers to gain practical experience and develop their technical skills. Their responsibilities often include assisting with the analysis and design of building structures, preparing drawings and reports, and learning building codes and standards. The EIT designation is a step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in structural engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a structural engineer in training expect during their first year on the job?

As a Structural Engineer In Training, you will typically support senior engineers in tasks such as drafting structural plans, performing basic calculations, and assisting with site inspections. You may work on a variety of projects, including residential, commercial, or infrastructure developments, which helps you build a broad foundation of experience. Your role often involves close collaboration with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to ensure project requirements are met. Additionally, you'll likely participate in team meetings and may be given increasing responsibility as you demonstrate competence, setting the stage for advancement toward a licensed Professional Engineer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer In Training, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, structural analysis, and design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools like SAP2000 or STAAD.Pro is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant structural designs while building a foundation for professional growth.

Job description

Entry Level Structural Engineer

Department: Structures

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Manchester, NH

Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000 / year

Description

We're growing our structural team, and we're looking for an early-career Structural Engineer who's ready to dig into a diverse portfolio of projects across multiple market sectors - not just observe, but contribute - while working alongside experienced engineers and design professionals in a genuinely collaborative, team-oriented environment.

This role is built for someone early in their structural engineering career who wants to expand their technical range, get exposure to a variety of building projects, and learn directly from seasoned professionals rather than figuring it out alone.

And we're backing that growth with more than mentorship alone: this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program. Over six months, you'll build professional development, business acumen, and project delivery skills through real case studies, simulations, and role-play - not passive lectures - culminating in an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design building-related structures across project types, including new construction, renovations, and repair projects
  • Perform structural condition assessments of existing buildings
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Collaborate with internal engineering and design teams to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Coordinate with external project partners and stakeholders as needed
  • Support senior engineers and contribute to team-based project delivery
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering
  • 1-5 years of relevant structural engineering experience
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification strongly preferred
  • Fundamental working knowledge of REVIT
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as RISA, Tekla, and EnerCalc is a plus
  • Working knowledge of building codes and nationally adopted design standards
Why Youโ€™ll Love Working with Us
  • Schedule Flexibility: Customize your work schedule to fit your life.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive health benefits to keep you and your family healthy.
  • Continuous Learning: Access to online courses, conferences, and learning materials to fuel your professional growth.
  • Paid Time Off: Take the time you need to recharge with our generous paid time off policy.
  • Career Advancement: Clear paths for promotions and the opportunity to take on new challenges.
  • Fun Team Culture: Regular team-building activities, happy hours, and company outings.

The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
