How much do structural eit jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural EIT?
To thrive as a Structural EIT (Engineer-in-Training), you generally need a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, a solid grasp of structural analysis, and an active EIT or FE certification. Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS is essential for performing technical calculations and preparing design documents. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate with project teams and address design challenges. These skills are important because they ensure accurate, safe, and efficient completion of structural engineering projects under the guidance of licensed engineers.
What types of projects and responsibilities can a Structural EIT expect in their first year?
As a Structural EIT, you will typically assist with the design and analysis of structural components for buildings, bridges, or other infrastructure projects under the supervision of licensed engineers. Your daily tasks may include drafting construction drawings, running structural calculations, reviewing shop drawings, and helping prepare reports or submittals. You’ll collaborate closely with senior engineers, architects, and other disciplines as part of a project team, gaining hands-on experience with both technical details and project coordination. This early exposure provides a valuable foundation for professional growth and helps prepare you for future licensure and increased responsibility.
What is a Structural EIT?
A Structural Engineer-in-Training (EIT) assists senior engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They use engineering principles, software tools, and industry codes to create safe and efficient designs. This role is a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), requiring hands-on experience and continued learning. Typical responsibilities include preparing calculations, drafting plans, coordinating with project teams, and conducting site visits.

From high-performance data centers driving the future of AI to dynamic commercial environments, your work will directly support technological advancement, sustainability, and human experience. We bring together mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering experts to solve complex design challenges with precision, creativity, and collaboration. Whether you're optimizing energy efficiency, integrating resilient systems, or engineering the backbone of next-generation facilities, your contributions will help define the future of the built environment. This isn't just a job, it's a chance to lead innovation, engineer impact, and build a legacy of excellence.
In the role of Site Civil EIT/Coordinator, we'll count on you to:
- Prepare site civil engineering plans including site layout, grading, utility, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control designs in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, permit applications, and contract documents
- Assist the Senior Engineer with site studies, site designs, contract documentation preparation and graphic presentation
- Coordinate with municipal agencies and regulatory authorities to support permitting and entitlement efforts
- Conduct site research, zoning reviews, and due diligence investigations to identify project constraints and opportunities
- Perform quantity takeoffs, cost-related calculations, and other engineering analyses to support project development
- Perform administrative duties associated with project management for civil/site projects
- Independently manage small tasks and assignments while supporting senior staff on larger and more complex projects
- Assist with site visits, field investigations, and construction-phase support activities
- Learn and apply HDR standards, procedures, and quality requirements while progressing toward professional licensure
- Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D or other software (Bentley OpenRoads, MicroStation, InfraWorks, ArcGIS, or similar platforms)

- Basic understanding of local, state, and jurisdictional design standards and permitting processes
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment while also working independently on assigned tasks
- Knowledge of civil engineering documentation and plan presentation, and how they interact with other discipline models
- Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software such as Hydraflow, PCSWMM, PondPack, HydroCAD, Bentley StormCAD, or similar software
- Previous internship in site civil engineering, land development, transportation, municipal, or water resources
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and collaboration with project teams and clients
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
