Strength and Conditioning specialists focus on improving athletic performance through specialized training programs, often working with athletes and sports teams. What are the typical challenges faced by strength and conditioning coaches when working with athletes of varying skill levels?

Strength and conditioning coaches often work with athletes who have diverse backgrounds, fitness levels, and training experience. A common challenge is developing individualized programs that address each athlete's unique needs while still aligning with team goals and schedules. Coaches must also communicate effectively with athletes, athletic trainers, and sport coaches to ensure safe progression and injury prevention. Balancing group training sessions with personalized attention, especially during busy seasons, requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, physiology, program design, and commonly a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Certifications such as CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) or NSCA certification, along with familiarity with fitness assessment tools and performance tracking systems, are typically required. Exceptional communication, motivational skills, and the ability to adapt programs to individual needs help coaches connect with athletes and drive results. These skills are vital for optimizing athlete performance, ensuring safety, and fostering a positive training environment.

What are strength and conditioning coaches?

Strength and conditioning coaches are fitness professionals who design and implement training programs to improve athletic performance, prevent injuries, and promote overall physical health. They typically work with athletes of all levels, from youth to professional, to help them build strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility. These coaches use a combination of exercises, techniques, and recovery strategies tailored to individual or team needs. Their role is essential in both sports performance and injury rehabilitation.

Job description

Excel Sports Management is an industry-leading sports agency representing top-tier talent, blue-chip brands and marquee properties. Our success is rooted in our people, our high character reputation and our commitment to creating a diverse and welcoming workplace. We focus on team chemistry, collaboration, strong relationships, valuable networks, and ambitious ideas to deliver innovative solutions that keep our clients and agency ahead of the curve.
Excel Sports Management is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).
Position Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Physical Therapist to join our high-performance team supporting elite and professional athletes. The ideal candidate will bring clinical expertise, innovation, and a collaborative mindset to help athletes recover, stay healthy, and elevate their performance. This role will be integral in bridging the gap between rehabilitation and sport-specific performance, working closely with agents, coaches, and performance staff to optimize athlete outcomes. This role will be based in our Irvine office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide evidence-based physical therapy care focused on return to performance, not just return to play.
  • Design and implement individualized treatment plans that align with sport demands, injury history, and performance goals.
  • Conduct detailed movement assessments, integrating clinical tools, strength metrics, and performance testing.
  • Collaborate with Biomechanist, strength & conditioning coaches, and medical professionals to create seamless care plans.
  • Utilize manual therapy, movement re-education, and advanced modalities to address dysfunctions and enhance recovery.
  • Track progress through consistent documentation, outcome measures, and athlete feedback.
  • Work with agents to support athletes during critical recovery or contract windows, providing transparent timelines and progress reporting.
  • Stay current with emerging research in sports physical therapy, regenerative medicine, and return-to-sport protocols.
  • Educate athletes on injury prevention, mobility strategies, and recovery optimization.

Minimum Skills and Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from an accredited program.
  • Active Physical Therapy license in the state of California (or eligibility to obtain).
  • 2+ years experience in high-performance or sports-specific settings (pro, collegiate, or elite private sector preferred).
  • Proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and communicate across domains.
  • Strong knowledge of sport-specific biomechanics, tissue loading principles, and functional return-to-play frameworks.
  • Comfortable working with data from force plates, wearable tech, and movement screens.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with high-profile athletes, agents, and coaches.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist (SCS) or Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS).
  • Experience with post-operative rehabilitation in professional athletes.
  • Certifications in dry needling, IASTM, DNS, PRI, or other advanced clinical methods.
  • Background or interest in integrating recovery technologies (e.g., BFR, neuromuscular re-education).

The pay range for this position is: $100,000-120,000 per year. This position is also eligible for benefits and discretionary bonus.
Ultimately, the salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, business sector, and geographic location, among other criteria.
This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
