Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. \r\n**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations** \r\n

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to install, maintain, and repair of roadway and street lighting as well as related electrical systems and equipment. Classification incumbents are required to perform field and shop maintenance on City owned/maintained street lights and related equipment. A variety of tasks performed requires practical knowledge of electricity. Primary work responsibilities may include: assisting in the installation, repair, and maintenance of City-owned/maintained roadway lighting fixtures as well as roadway lighting and traffic signal structures; performing manual labor; operating and working from a bucket truck; operating a digger/derrick truck; and assisting in the performance of routine equipment maintenance. The Street Lighting Technician I is distinguished from the Street Lighting Technician II in that the Technician Is perform the more entry-level and routine tasks while gaining on-the-job training on more technical tasks and equipment operation. Incumbents may work independently on more routine maintenance and repair tasks but more difficult work is performed under the guidance of the Street Lighting Technician II or the Traffic Control Supervisor. Supervision is received from the Traffic Control Supervisor.\r\n

Minimum Qualifications

\r\n\r\nG.E.D. or High School diploma. Two (2) years of experience working on 480-volt electrical systems OR four (4) years of experience working on 120/240-volt electrical systems.6 months or more of experience operating digger derrick trucks is a plus.\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record. Must have (or obtain within the six-month probationary period) a Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brakes.\r\nPHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to bend, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, climb, and work in restricted and/or confined spaces for extended periods of time (up to ten hours).Physical ability to work from a bucket (of a bucket truck) at heights up to 160 feet for extended periods of time as needed to install, repair, and maintain roadway lighting devices and equipment. Physical ability to lift or carry heavy objects up to 50-60 lbs. for short duration, unassisted, as needed to install, maintain and repair roadway lighting equipment.Physical ability to distinguish between colors as needed to differentiate between color-coded wires and signal lights in order to make repairs.\r\nWORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed with exposure to both low- and high-voltage electrical outputs. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: at heights up to 160 feet above ground, in unkempt areas with tall weeds and exposure to local wildlife, and in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heat, cold, rain, and lightning. Work will require some overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty. \r\n
