Job Summary Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Value Stream Manager (VSM) oversees the Order Fulfillment Process (from quoting through shipping and invoicing) for their assigned market(s). The VSM is responsible for the development and performance of the plant personnel that work in their value stream. Responsible for the direction and coordination of all production operations in their respective value stream through subordinate supervisors and/or team leads. Subordinate functions include but are not limited to the following: customer service, machining operations, assembly operations, processing, packaging and shipping. 


Essential Job Functions

  • Lead, coach, and develop team members. Establish clear expectations, provide feedback, support employee growth and development to achieve goals for productivity, quality, cost, and culture engagement.
  • Build and sustain a culture of safety, engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement through empowerment. Ensure a safe work environment through accident prevention, near-miss remediation and safety compliance.
  • Lead & set production line priorities & schedules to meet customer delivery needs. Lead problem solving, and root-cause analysis to eliminate bottlenecks and stabilize processes. Adjust resources where needed to satisfy demands.
  • Monitor and manage inventory levels that satisfy current demands, support purchasing where needed.
  • Achieve manufacturing goals for quality, delivery reliability, order fill time, inventory as % of sales, utilization, and efficiency.
  • Drive quality performance, ensure products meet customer and internal requirements; lead containment, corrective action, and prevention for nonconformances.
  • Promote collaboration, communication, and alignment cross-functionally with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Service and Sales.
  • Lead kaizens and train direct reports to lead kaizens to solve business problems utilizing lean problem-solving tools such as DMAIC A3, 5 Why, SDB and DDB visual management systems.
  • Recommend revision of methods, equipment, tooling and/or materials to maintain maximum quality and efficiency in performance of production personnel, while minimizing costs and lead times.
  • Share best practices across the company that have been developed locally while adopting best practices from other facilities to ensure we standardize processes across facilities at the best practice level.
  • Maintain the facility in tour-ready condition so customers have confidence in our ability to meet their needs during periodic visits. 
  • Participate in the gross profit review process to eliminate money losing jobs and ensure continuous improvement of the estimating process. Assist estimating team in new quote packages and customer requirements reviews.
  • Assist with capital project planning and support project execution.
  • Assist Operations Management in setting budgets, forecasts, strategic planning and vision.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Ability to lead and influence people and teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent math skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Technically competent and able to provide clear direction.
  • Ability to be hands on.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field, four years of experience in management, or any similar combination of education and experience is required. 
  • At least two years of experience in the manufacturing industry is required. 
  • Knowledge of Quality Concepts (i.e. SPC, TQM, JIT) and Quality Systems (i.e. ISO 9000, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Zero Defects) is preferred.

Physical Requirements 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
