What is strategic planning?

Strategic planning is an organizational process used to define a company's direction, set long-term goals, and develop plans for achieving those objectives. It involves analyzing internal and external environments, setting priorities, allocating resources, and aligning stakeholders toward common goals. Strategic planning helps organizations respond to change, stay competitive, and measure progress effectively.

What are the qualifications to get a strategic planning job?

The primary qualifications for a strategic planning job are a bachelor's degree and five years of experience. Employers may prefer a master's degree, an MBA, or additional experience in a consulting position. Experience is the most valuable trait here, so the more you have, the more likely you are to stand out from other applicants. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a strategic planning job requires analytical skills, research skills, communication skills, and the ability to handle multi-variable problems in a fast-paced environment. Expert-level proficiency with spreadsheets is particularly helpful in this role. Strategic planning roles at international companies may require fluency in one or more additional languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic planner, and why are they important?

To excel as a Strategic Planner, you need strong analytical abilities, business acumen, and a background in fields like business administration or economics, often supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools, strategic planning frameworks, and project management software is typically required. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies enable effective long-term planning, informed decision-making, and successful execution of organizational strategies.

How does a strategic planning professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Strategic Planning professionals work closely with various teams, such as finance, marketing, operations, and executive leadership, to gather data, align on organizational goals, and develop actionable plans. They facilitate cross-functional meetings, synthesize input from stakeholders, and ensure that departmental strategies are consistent with the overall direction of the company. Regular collaboration helps them identify potential risks and opportunities, making their role central to driving long-term growth and adapting to market changes.

Job description

Help Shape the Strategy That Drives the Future of Fieldpiece

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We're known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every day—and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future. Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we're looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

Why This Role?

If you enjoy helping executive teams solve complex business challenges, aligning organizations around a shared vision, and turning strategy into measurable results, this is an opportunity to make an enterprise-wide impact.

As the Director of Strategy, you'll help shape Fieldpiece's future by partnering directly with the Chief Strategy & People Officer, executive leadership team, and Board of Directors. You'll have a seat at the table where the company's biggest decisions are made - partnering directly with executive leadership and the Board to shape strategy, influence priorities, and help turn vision into measurable business results.  This is a highly visible role that combines strategic planning with hands-on execution. You'll facilitate executive planning sessions, develop Board-level materials, guide enterprise initiatives, and help leaders turn ambitious goals into measurable business results.
This position is based in our Park City, UT office with an exciting move to Heber City, UT in 2027.  We work a hybrid schedule, with employees typically onsite three days per week. Additional in-office days may be required.  Travel is expected to be up to 25%.

What You'll Do

  • Lead enterprise strategic planning and deployment initiatives.
  • Develop executive- and Board-level presentations, reports, and recommendations.
  • Facilitate annual planning sessions, quarterly business reviews, and leadership offsites.
  • Partner with leaders across the business to align priorities and drive execution.
  • Track strategic initiatives, monitor performance, and communicate progress.
  • Coach leaders on strategy deployment, organizational alignment, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that improve business performance and organizational effectiveness.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

  • Work directly with the executive leadership team and Board of Directors on the company's highest priority initiatives.
  • Help shape both the company's long-term strategy and how it’s deployed and executed across the organization.
  • Influence decisions across Product, Engineering, Operations, Sales, and People functions.
  • Blend strategy, executive communications, business transformation, hands-on execution and continuous improvement in one highly visible role.

In Your First Year, You'll Likely

  • Become a trusted strategic advisor to the executive leadership team and the Board.
  • Successfully lead the annual strategic planning process and quarterly strategy reviews.
  • Improve organizational alignment by strengthening strategy deployment, measuring results, and executive communication.
  • Deliver clear, insightful Board materials that support informed decision making.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, operations, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in corporate strategy, strategy deployment, business transformation, Chief of Staff, management consulting, or similar leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience developing enterprise strategy and leading strategy deployment across complex organizations.
  • Experience preparing and presenting executive- and Board-level presentations, reports, and decision materials.
  • Experience with Hoshin Kanri, Policy Deployment, OKRs, EOS, or similar strategy deployment frameworks.
  • Experience with Danaher Business System, Fortive Business System, Toyota Production System, or other Lean operating systems.
  • Outstanding executive communication, presentation, facilitation, and storytelling skills.
  • Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and structured problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders without direct authority.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives involving multiple business functions.
  • Strong understanding of continuous improvement and organizational change principles.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • MBA or other advanced business degrees.
  • Experience in manufacturing, engineering, or product development organizations.
  • Background in management consulting or corporate strategy.

Why You'll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long term—in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
  • Work alongside talented, collaborative teammates who are passionate about innovation and solving real world problems.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a company where your ideas are heard, your expertise is valued, and your contributions help shape the future of our products and business.

Benefits & Perks

We believe great work starts with supporting our employees. That's why we offer a competitive total rewards package designed to promote your health, financial well-being, work-life balance, and professional growth.

  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus opportunity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Hire to Retire philosophy - Individual Development Plans for everyone and a commitment to support career development
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Music program – music rooms in all US offices with onsite guitar, piano, and voice lessons in California (classes can be streamed for other offices)
  • Recognition programs, launch parties and team building events to share successes

Our Culture

At Fieldpiece, our values shape how we work, collaborate, and serve our customers every day. We believe in:

  • Teamwork – We collaborate, support one another, and win as a team.
  • Urgency – We move quickly, stay agile, and focus on what matters most.

  • No Ego – We leave titles and egos at the door, value the best ideas regardless of where they come from, and work together with humility, openness, and mutual respect.

At Fieldpiece, we're building more than innovative products - we're building careers. If you're looking for a place where your work matters and your contributions are recognized, we'd love to meet you.
