Job description

The Enterprise IT Strategy team partners closely with product, IT, and operations leaders to shape and execute the organization's cloud and infrastructure strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals. We analyze market trends, emerging technologies, and financial sector dynamics to identify opportunities and risks, translating insights into actionable strategies. We also design and implement scalable, secure, and resilient AWS environments while driving innovation in areas like multi-region architecture, disaster recovery, and infrastructure automation.

As an IT Blockchain Intern, you will contribute to research, develop, analysis and project support activities related to blockchain and digital asset initiatives. You will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate use cases, assess market and technology trends and support the development of strategic recommendations. This role offers exposure to emerging technologies within a structured enterprise environment and may support multiple initiatives as assigned by leadership.

This role is hybrid (Mon through Thu on-site / Fri remote) at the UMB Technology & Operations Center located in downtown Kansas City, MO.

How you will spend your time:

  • Conduct research and develop on blockchain platforms, digital assets, tokenization, smart contracts and broader distributed ledger technology trends.
  • Support the assessment/development of potential blockchain use cases by analyzing business value, operational considerations and implementation challenges.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, document business needs and support initiative planning.
  • Analyze market activity, competitive developments and industry trends across financial services, payments and digital asset ecosystems.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations and executive-ready materials summarizing research findings, recommendations and project updates.
  • Support the creation of business cases, process documentation and value assessments for emerging technology initiatives.
  • Participate in proof-of-concept, pilot or exploratory efforts related to blockchain-enabled solutions.
  • Help monitor relevant regulatory, operational and technology developments that may influence blockchain or digital asset strategy.
  • Contribute documentation of workflows, requirements, risks and key considerations for potential implementations.

We are excited to talk if you have:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics/Statistics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest/experience/developing in blockchain, digital assets, tokenization, fintech or emerging technologies.
  • Foundational understanding of blockchain concepts, including distributed ledgers, consensus models, smart contracts, wallets and tokenized assets.
  • Strong analytical, development, research and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate findings into clear insights.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information in a concise and professional manner.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex business problems and drive strategic initiatives.

Bonus Points if you have:

  • Relevant coursework, internship or project experience related to blockchain, fintech or digital assets.
  • Familiarity/experience working with blockchain platforms or tools such as Ethereum, Hyperledger or Solidity.
  • Exposure to financial services, banking, payments or regulatory environments.
  • Experience conducting market research, development, data analysis or strategic assessments.
  • Understanding of agile delivery methods, pilot programs or innovation frameworks.
  • Technical familiarity with APIs, cloud environments or prototype development.
