What is strategic design?

Strategic design is the practice of using design principles to solve complex business challenges and shape organizational strategy. It goes beyond traditional design by integrating research, creative thinking, and business objectives to create solutions that align with a company's long-term goals. Strategic designers work collaboratively across disciplines to innovate processes, products, services, and systems, helping companies adapt to change and remain competitive. This approach often involves user-centered research, prototyping, and testing to ensure that solutions are both practical and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic designer?

To thrive as a Strategic Designer, you need a strong foundation in design thinking, business strategy, and user research, often supported by a degree in design, business, or related fields. Proficiency with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Miro, and familiarity with frameworks such as Lean Startup or Agile is typical. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help in aligning multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure that innovative, user-centered solutions are developed and successfully integrated with organizational goals.

How does a strategic designer typically collaborate with stakeholders and cross-functional teams during a project?

Strategic Designers often work closely with a variety of stakeholders, including product managers, engineers, marketers, and executives, to align design solutions with business objectives. They facilitate workshops, lead design sprints, and use research-driven insights to ensure everyone has a shared understanding of project goals. Effective communication and the ability to synthesize diverse perspectives are crucial, as Strategic Designers act as a bridge between creative and business teams. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures that proposed solutions are both user-centered and strategically viable.

What is the difference between Strategic Design vs User Experience Designer?

Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Partner Solutions Architect (PSA) to join the Technology Center of Excellence (Tech COE) team, focused on Independent Software Vendor (ISV) partners. In this role, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor to strategic ISV partners, helping them architect, build, and optimize their solutions on AWS. You will drive deep technical engagement with ISV partners to accelerate their cloud adoption, validate joint solutions, and enable go-to-market success through co-engineering efforts, technical enablement, and solution design.

As a PSA in the Tech COE, you will combine broad technical expertise with strong relationship‑building skills to influence partner technology decisions, identify strategic design wins, and deliver customer value through partner‑led solutions. You will work at the intersection of partner strategy and hands‑on technical delivery — bridging business outcomes with cloud architecture best practices.

Key job responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical advisor for assigned ISV partners, conducting architectural reviews, POCs, and Well‑Architected assessments
  • Design, build, and validate scalable cloud‑native partner solutions through co‑engineering efforts that drive strategic design wins (SDWs)
  • Develop reference architectures and best‑practice documentation for partner solutions
  • Enable partner teams through workshops, immersion days, and hands‑on training; support readiness for ISV Accelerate, Competency programs, and Marketplace
  • Collaborate with AWS field teams (Account SAs, AMs, Specialist SAs) to drive partner‑led customer engagements and pipeline growth
  • Track engagement metrics, co‑engineering milestones, and strategic design win attainment
  • Partner with AWS service teams to advocate for ISV requirements and influence roadmap priorities
  • Collaborate across APO on territory strategy, partner prioritization, and joint planning
  • Represent AWS at partner events and create technical content (blogs, case studies, whitepapers) showcasing partner success
About the team

Your day blends deep technical work with strategic partner engagement. Mornings often start with architecture discussions — whiteboarding a multi‑tenant design on EKS or reviewing a partner’s Marketplace listing readiness. Mid‑day, you’re co‑engineering hands‑on with a partner’s team, building a POC that integrates Amazon Bedrock into their platform. Afternoons shift to cross‑functional collaboration: syncing with field SAs on customer opportunities, advocating for partner requirements with AWS service teams, or presenting a recent strategic design win to your Tech COE peers. You’ll wrap up capturing field insights, updating engagement trackers, and drafting technical content. No two days are identical, but each balances technical depth, relationship building, and measurable partner impact.
