Job Summary:
The Manager, Marketing and Communications acts as a key business partner. Collaborating with program, site, regional and corporate leaders from across VON, the Manager ensures that VON's brand is strong, consistent and highly visible among all audiences; that VON's reputation is sustained and strengthened; that critical marketing and communication channels are modern, effective, efficient and aligned with each other and the VON brand; and that the marketing and communications team is optimally supporting all parts of the organization in achieving their Corporate and operational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops and implements integrated marketing and communications plans targeted to a wide range of external and internal audiences, in support of VON's corporate and operational goals
  • Oversees and directs the work of a marketing and communications team, in support of marketing and communications activities
  • Provides advice and guidance to VON sites on local/regional communications and marketing activities
  • Identifies threats and potential issues that could affect VON's reputation, and implements and oversees a process to protect the organization's brand and reputation
  • Provides strategic communication and stakeholder relations advice and support to manage medium-level risk reputation-affecting issues; works with VP to manage communication on high-level risk issues
  • Supports mission-critical government and advocacy work, helping to strengthen VON's visibility among key influencers and decision-makers by engaging others through social media and other channels
  • Leads the development of key corporate social media assets and plans; establishes and ensures adherence to guidelines to ensure "one voice, one brand" and efficiency, while enabling strong local channel leadership and engagement
  • Oversees and/or provides advice to support key events targeted to clients, donors, and key volunteers
  • Leads the development and creation of core content for VON social media, internal communication and donor relations channels, ensuring content is timely, adequate and fully representative of VON's brand and work across all programs and all sites
  • Maintains and constantly refreshes the VON brand toolkit, ensuring that all parts of the organization understand the brand and have access to critical brand tools in support of their own work with clients, employees, partners and other key stakeholders
  • Ensures that all marketing and communications plans and activities reflect the VON brand, and are sensitive to the needs and concerns of intended audiences, including clients and their families
  • Develops key marketing and communications performance indicators and reports quarterly on relevant metrics
  • Understands and contributes to enabling philanthropy programs and results, bringing to bear core marketing and communication skills, ensuring that VON's position as a charity is highly visible among critical audiences and the Community Corporations are considered as key partners in this work
  • Develops, implements and oversees internal communication initiatives that foster awareness and collaboration across departments, including monthly e-newsletter Blueprint
  • Proofreads, edits and provides quality control on external documents as required in English and/or French
  • Writes and produces materials in support of all key areas of responsibility
  • Manages planning, writing, editing, production and distribution of reports, newsletters and publications as required
  • Participates in department budget preparation, financial performance management and measurement reports.

  • Prioritizes and ensures alignment of emerging opportunities in the community with VON strategic plan
  • Provides leadership in navigating the requirements and complexities of unionized and non- unionized environments
  • Coaches, advises, motivates, and provides leadership to staff; creates a positive workplace for staff
  • Promotes the Lean team management approach to ensure a common paradigm of management and discipline of management practices
  • Ensures there are mechanisms for all staff to come together to hear of organizational news and to provide feedback on what is working and what is not working
  • Ensures all Districts have a plan to complete performance development and learning plans with all staff
  • Promotes common approaches to orientation, learning, motivating, recognizing and supporting staff when achieving organizational goals; such as meeting or exceeding KPIs, meeting or exceeding milestones
  • Provides leadership and commitment to building client and family engagement and following accreditation Canada Standards
  • Provides leadership in the promotion of a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, that KPIs related to safety are regularly reviewed by management, that appropriate investigations occur when needed, and plans to address issues are created and acted upon.
  • Compliant with the VON Safety Management System, including all Safe Work Practices and Procedures.
  • Promotes work/life balance fostering professional excellence and personal fulfilment and health
  • Promotes the use of technology-based systems for the capture, transformation and distribution of knowledge
  • Abides by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies, regulations and practices and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place in the Region
External and Internal Relationships:
  • Develops and sustains positive internal relationships with departments and functions in VON to ensure integrated efforts
  • Develops external working relations with media, communications professionals in government, consultants, and departmental vendors to support VON initiatives and campaigns
  • Works with Community Corporations on regional and national projects
  • Oversees the work of contractors through a collaborative relationship with external vendors including evaluating and negotiating vendor contracts, as required
Education, Designations and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree/ relevant post-secondary education in marketing, public relations, English, journalism, business administration or equivalent experience in media relations, communications and/or marketing
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience that includes strategic internal and external communications, traditional media relations, marketing and managing online content and experience providing oversight to team members
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing complex communications and marketing plans that engage/involve executive levels of organization
  • Proven success with website management and knowledge of Content Management Software (Drupal, WordPress) as well as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), keyword search and Google Analytics
  • Proven success with online community management/moderation
  • Understanding of crisis communication best practices
  • Proven experience writing for a range of purposes including media relations, website, social media, advertising copy, events
  • Experience in charity environment with a proven track record in fundraising is an asset
  • Experience working in the health and/or community support services sector is an asset.

  • Advanced skill using computer software programs including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent proofreading, copy editing and quality control skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships with people at all levels (internal and external)
  • Ability to effectively structure daily work activity with minimal supervision, and to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment while balancing competing priorities, all while focusing on goals

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
