What are STRs (short-term rentals)?

STRs, or Short-Term Rentals, refer to properties that are rented out for short periods, typically less than 30 days at a time. These rentals are commonly found on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, and can include apartments, houses, or even just rooms within a property. STRs are popular among travelers seeking flexible and affordable accommodation options. Owners or managers of STRs are responsible for managing bookings, maintaining the property, and often complying with local regulations and taxes regarding short-term lodging. The growth of the STR market has prompted many cities to enact specific rules and licensing requirements.

Job description

CPA/Tax Strategist for STRs (PA) — Looking for Referrals

Hey everyone—looking for a solid CPA/tax strategist in the PA area who really understands short-term rentals.

My wife and I are a dual W2 household planning to buy our first STR, and we want to be intentional about tax strategy from day one (material participation, STR treatment, etc.), not just react at filing time.

Looking for someone who:

  • Works regularly with STR investors (not just general real estate)
  • Is proactive and strategic, not just a tax preparer
  • Has clear, upfront pricing (not commission-based or % of “savings” models)
  • Has experience advising dual W2 households transitioning into STRs

Would really appreciate referrals to CPAs you’ve personally worked with and trust. Thanks in advance!

Buying a STR that is treated as 'active' for tax purposes, will go along way in reducing your federal tax burden.

Just have to be a little careful with Pennsylvania since it is a 'gross income' state.

Best of luck!
