Job description

About the Role
  • As Principal Product Designer - Subscription Growth, you will define the future of subscriber growth across Dow Jones' portfolio of brands, including The Wall Street Journal, Barr's, MarketWatch, Investor's Business Daily, and future subscription products.
  • In this senior individual contributor role that operates at the intersection of design strategy, business strategy, and growth, you'll establish the long-term vision for how prospective customers discover, evaluate, and subscribe across our Commerce ecosystem - spanning registration, paywalls, shop experiences, pricing and packaging, checkout, identity, and experimentation.
  • You will partner closely with Product, Marketing, Brand, Engineering, Research, Analytics, and executive leadership to solve highly ambiguous challenges and shape investment priorities that accelerate subscriber growth.
  • Your work will define scalable Commerce patterns, influence our acquisition platform strategy, and connect design decisions to measurable business outcomes across multiple brands.
  • Beyond delivering exceptional product experiences, you'll mentor senior designers, elevate design quality across Commerce, and establish standards that scale throughout the organization.
  • You report to the Director of Product Design, Commerce.
About Dow Jones Design & Research

Our Design & Research org brings together world-class designers and researchers with a unified purpose: to connect people to the news and information that matters most. We're the strategic force that transforms deep user understanding into exceptional product experiences across our entire portfolio—from The Wall Street Journal to Factiva. Our integrated approach ensures that research insights directly shape design decisions, while design explorations reveal new research opportunities. Together, we're building coherent, accessible experiences that honor our 135-year legacy while pushing us boldly into the future. We're a globally distributed team spearheading a digital transformation at Dow Jones, newly staffed by industry leaders from Google, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and more. Through our combined expertise in design craft and research rigor, we ensure millions of users can depend on our platforms for truth in a world full of noise.

Responsibilities
  • Define the long-term design strategy for subscriber growth across multiple Dow Jones brands.
  • Lead highly ambiguous, business-critical initiatives spanning registration, identity, paywalls, shop experiences, pricing, packaging, checkout, and experimentation.
  • Partner with senior leadership across Product, Marketing, Brand, Engineering, Research, and Analytics to shape roadmap priorities and strategic investments.
  • Create scalable acquisition patterns, frameworks, and interaction models that extend our Index Design System and can be reused across brands.
  • Drive experimentation strategy by identifying high-impact opportunities throughout the acquisition funnel and translating insights into long-term product improvements.
  • Translate customer research, behavioral data, market trends, and business goals into experiences that improve acquisition performance while maintaining a high bar for user experience.
  • Lead strategic design explorations, vision work, and cross-functional workshops that align teams around future Commerce investments.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level designers through design reviews, coaching, and thoughtful feedback that elevates craft across the organization.
  • Influence how Commerce measures success by defining experience quality metrics alongside conversion, acquisition, and revenue KPIs.
  • Represent Commerce Design within the broader Design & Research organization while contributing to company-wide design strategy and thought leadership.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of product design experience leading complex digital products.
  • Portfolio demonstrating systems thinking, product vision, and measurable business impact.
  • Experience leading highly ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Exceptional interaction, visual, systems, and service design skills.
  • Demonstrated success influencing senior stakeholders and driving alignment across disciplines.
  • Experience defining design systems, reusable frameworks, and scalable product patterns.
  • Outstanding communication and storytelling skills.
  • Expert proficiency in Figma and modern design workflows.
  • Deep understanding of accessibility and inclusive design.
  • Experience mentoring senior designers and raising design quality across organizations.
Nice to Have
  • Experience designing subscription acquisition, paywalls, registration, or checkout experiences.
  • Experience partnering closely with Marketing or Growth organizations.
  • Familiarity with pricing strategy, packaging, promotional offers, or experimentation platforms.
  • Background in media, publishing, or consumer subscription businesses.
  • Experience working across globally distributed organizations.
