Story Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Story Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Story Intern, you need a strong foundation in creative writing, storytelling techniques, and an understanding of narrative structure, often supported by coursework in film, animation, or literature. Familiarity with scriptwriting software (like Final Draft or Celtx), storyboarding tools, and basic editing platforms is typically required. Strong collaboration, communication, and attention to detail are valuable soft skills for contributing ideas and working within creative teams. These skills ensure you can effectively support the story development process, communicate ideas clearly, and adapt to the fast-paced, iterative environment of media production.

What are some common responsibilities and learning experiences for a Story Intern in a creative studio?

As a Story Intern in a creative studio, you are often involved in supporting the development of storyboards, brainstorming narrative ideas, and assisting writers or directors with script revisions. You'll collaborate closely with senior story artists and other departments such as animation and editorial, gaining firsthand insight into the storytelling pipeline. This role is an excellent opportunity to build your visual storytelling skills, receive feedback from industry professionals, and contribute to early-stage creative decisions, all of which are valuable for career growth in animation or film.

What is a Story Intern?

A Story Intern is an entry-level position, often within film, animation, television, or publishing companies, where the intern assists with the development and organization of stories and scripts. Responsibilities may include conducting research, providing feedback on story ideas, assisting with script revisions, and supporting the story team in various creative tasks. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the storytelling process, making it ideal for students or recent graduates interested in creative writing, screenwriting, or story development careers.

What is the difference between Story Intern vs Content Writer?

AspectStory InternContent Writer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate, some internships may require related courseworkOften requires a degree in English, Journalism, or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in media, entertainment, or publishing companiesFull-time or freelance roles in digital media, marketing, or publishing
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by media companies, production houses, and entertainment firmsCommon across marketing agencies, online platforms, and publishing houses

The main difference is that a Story Intern is typically an entry-level internship focused on assisting with storytelling projects, gaining experience, and learning industry skills. A Content Writer, on the other hand, is a more established role involving creating and editing written content regularly. While both roles involve storytelling, the intern position is more about learning and supporting, whereas the content writer is responsible for producing finished content.

KATU/KUNP Summer News Intern
Step inside the newsroom where stories break, voices matter, and information moves at the speed of now.
We're looking for a passionate, curious, and driven News Intern to join our team for Summer 2026. As part of a forward-thinking media organization, you won't just observe-you'll actively contribute to the storytelling that informs and connects our community across platforms.
From breaking news to digital-first storytelling, this is your opportunity to experience what modern journalism really looks like.

This is a fast-paced, real newsroom-no two days are the same.
  • Create & Contribute: Assist in researching, writing, and producing news stories for broadcast and digital platforms
  • Be Where the Action Is: Work alongside reporters, anchors, producers, and photographers-both in the newsroom and out in the field
  • Pitch Ideas: Bring fresh story ideas to the table and help shape coverage that matters to our audience
  • Get Hands-On: Learn how to shoot video, frame compelling visuals, and understand what makes a story stand out
  • Behind the Scenes: Gain exposure to control room operations and how live broadcasts come together in real time
What You'll Gain
This internship is designed to build real skills-not just fill a line on your résumé.
  • Hands-on experience in modern, multi-platform journalism
  • A deeper understanding of how today's newsrooms operate-from broadcast to digital and social
  • Opportunities to build a professional portfolio with published or produced work
  • Mentorship from experienced journalists who know the industry inside and out
  • Valuable connections to jumpstart your career in media
To be considered, candidates must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or a recent graduate
  • Be at least a sophomore at an accredited college/university
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Be available to work on-site at KATU/KUNP in Portland, OR approximately 15 hours per week for 10 weeks
  • Be able to start between June 1 - June 19, 2026
  • Have reliable transportation (housing/relocation is not provided)
  • Be passionate about local news, storytelling, and community impact
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
All candidates must apply through our careers portal and complete pre-employment requirements.
Why Join Us
Because journalism in 2026 is more dynamic than ever-and this is your chance to be part of it.
Join a team that values accuracy, creativity, and impact. Help tell stories that matter, develop skills that translate across platforms, and take your first step into a career in news.
