A Brief Overview
Provides blood specimen collection services in the acute care (hospital) setting, to include order management, specimen collection (venipuncture and capillary puncture specimens) and point of care testing. Serves patients in all areas in the hospital, including ED/Trauma, Critical Care, medical floors, airborne and contact isolation rooms, Surgery, maternal/child, Behavioral Health and long-term care facilities; responds to team activation events such as code blue, stroke, and trauma.
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma / GED Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program may be substituted for education. Required

Experience Qualifications
  • Experience with phlebotomy. Preferred
  • Experience in a lab or hospital setting. Preferred
  • Venipuncture and capillary puncture experience. Preferred
  • Experience with electronic medical records and patient privacy. Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Accuracy and attention to detail. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications
  • Drivers License - DOT Clean MVR with 3-year baseline. Required
  • Registered Phlebotomy Technician - AMT Preferred
  • PBT-Phlebotomy Technician - ASCP Preferred

What you will do
  • Obtain and properly identify blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary punctures in all age groups (infants, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics) and patient types throughout the hospital and long-term care facilities.
  • Prioritize collection of specimens, including STAT, timed, routine and therapeutic drug-monitoring collections.
  • Perform and result point of care testing on blood, urine, and respiratory specimens.
  • Access, select, release and print interfaced orders from the electronic medical record system, resolving unusual or duplicative orders as needed.
  • Travel to additional clinic locations in the Stormont Vail Laboratory system as needed.
  • Follow all safety and infection prevention guidelines, both related to the care of the patient as well as to the employee.
  • Assist with teaching, training, and mentoring phlebotomist interns and trainees.
  • Collect specimens for legal blood alcohol, drug screens, and paternity tests; testify in regional court systems to explain collection procedure if subpoenaed.
  • Maintain and monitor supply stock in the laboratory.
  • Apply mathematics to determine safe removal volume for pediatric blood collections.
  • Demonstrate and follow professional behavior and Phlebotomist Service Standards when interacting with patients and other members of the health care team.
  • Travel to outside locations if requested.

  • 20% Travel to other locations for specimen collection may be required depending on department/shift needs.
