Storm Search information

What is a storm search?

A Storm Search job typically involves tracking and analyzing severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and storms, to provide timely warnings and data. Professionals in this field may work for meteorological agencies, emergency response teams, or private weather services. They use advanced technology, such as radar and satellite imaging, to monitor storm patterns and assess potential impacts. The goal is to enhance public safety and preparedness by delivering accurate forecasts and emergency alerts.

What does a storm search do?

A typical day for someone in a Storm Search role involves continuously monitoring weather data, interpreting radar imagery, and communicating real-time updates to emergency management officials and the public. Much of the work is fast-paced, especially during severe weather events, requiring both fieldwork and remote analysis. Storm Search professionals often collaborate with meteorologists, first responders, and local authorities to provide timely, actionable information. The role may also include preparing predictive reports, participating in safety briefings, and sometimes extensive travel to areas affected by upcoming storms. This dynamic environment offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in public safety and community preparedness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the storm search position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Storm Search specialist, you need a solid understanding of meteorology, data analysis, and emergency response protocols, often supported by a degree in atmospheric sciences or a related field. Familiarity with weather radar systems, GIS software, and storm tracking tools is vital, as is training in safety procedures and certifications like SKYWARN or FEMA courses. Strong observational skills, adaptability, and clear communication are essential soft skills for quickly assessing evolving weather situations and collaborating with emergency teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure accurate, real-time storm monitoring and effective response to severe weather threats.

We are seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to join a growing construction team in Pontiac, MI. This position is ideal for an estimator with hands-on experience in commercial asphalt, paving, sitework, earthwork, or underground utilities who can independently review plans, perform quantity takeoffs, develop accurate cost estimates, and prepare competitive bids.

This is not an entry-level estimating position. The ideal candidate will have experience estimating commercial and/or public construction projects and a strong understanding of construction materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work

  • Develop detailed and accurate cost estimates for commercial and public construction projects
  • Prepare competitive bid proposals and ensure submissions meet required deadlines
  • Solicit, review, and incorporate subcontractor and vendor pricing
  • Identify project scope, potential risks, and cost considerations prior to bidding
  • Monitor material pricing, labor rates, and market conditions
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, Operations, and other internal teams
  • Communicate with vendors, subcontractors, and clients regarding project scope and pricing
  • Maintain historical estimating and project cost information
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and occasional site visits as needed

Qualifications

  • 1–2+ years of commercial asphalt/paving estimating experience preferred
  • Experience with earthwork, dirt work, site development, and/or underground utilities strongly preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications
  • Experience performing quantity takeoffs and preparing detailed construction estimates
  • Knowledge of commercial and/or public construction bidding processes
  • Experience with construction estimating software such as HCSS, Bluebeam, Procore, PlanSwift, Timberline/Sage, or similar
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates and meet bid deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant construction estimating experience is valued more heavily than a specific degree
  • Relocation assistance is not provided; candidates must be local to the Pontiac, MI area
