Job description

The Retail Garden Center Associate is responsible for providing excellent customer service, maintaining an attractive and organized retail environment, processing sales transactions, and supporting daily garden center operations. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist retail customers and landscapers with plant selection, product information, and general gardening inquiries.
  • Enter customer orders accurately into the inventory and order management system.
  • Generate and send invoices to customers in a timely manner.
  • Collect and process customer payments, including cash, checks, and electronic payments using Square.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing storefront and sales area.
  • Create, arrange, and maintain attractive plant displays and merchandising presentations.
  • Communicate regularly with nursery production staff and landscaping customers regarding plant availability, inventory needs, and customer orders.
  • Assist with receiving, stocking, labeling, and organizing plants and garden center merchandise.
  • Work outdoors as needed to assist customers, move inventory, water plants, and maintain display areas.
  • Participate in testing and evaluating products, layouts, procedures, and merchandising concepts for a new storefront location.
  • Monitor inventory levels and report shortages or discrepancies.
  • Perform general housekeeping and maintenance duties throughout the garden center.
  • Support additional projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual English/Spanish required. This position regularly communicates with Spanish-speaking nursery employees, landscaping professionals, and members of the public. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish.
  • Interest in plants, gardening, or horticulture is highly desirable.
  • Previous retail, garden center, nursery, landscaping, or customer service experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn inventory and point-of-sale systems.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and moving plant material and merchandise.

Transportation Requirement

  • Reliable personal transportation is required. The work location is not accessible by public transportation, and employees must be able to travel to and from work independently.

Schedule

  • Full-time: 8 hours daily, weekend opportunities available.
  • Store hours: M-F 7:30am-4pm, Sat 9am-3pm
  • Weekend and seasonal availability may be required.
