What is a store mascot?

Store mascots are individuals who dress up in costumes, often representing a brand or character, to engage with customers and promote a business. Their main role is to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere, attract attention to the store, and help with marketing events or special promotions. Store mascots may interact with customers through greetings, photo opportunities, and participating in store activities. They play an important part in enhancing the customer experience and building brand recognition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a store mascot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Store Mascot, you need high energy, stamina, and the ability to perform physically demanding routines, often with experience in entertainment or customer service. Familiarity with costume maintenance, safety protocols, and sometimes basic choreography or acting skills is beneficial. Excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and the ability to engage positively with both children and adults help create memorable customer experiences. These abilities are crucial for promoting the store's brand, drawing in customers, and ensuring a fun, safe environment.

What are some common challenges faced by a store mascot and how can they be managed?

Store Mascots often encounter challenges such as staying energetic and engaging for long periods while wearing a costume, which can be physically demanding and hot. Effective mascots manage this by taking scheduled breaks, staying hydrated, and maintaining communication with their team for support. They also need to adapt quickly to interacting with diverse customers, including children, and handle unexpected situations with professionalism and enthusiasm. Teamwork and preparation are key to ensuring a positive, safe, and fun experience for both the mascot and store visitors.

NORTH CENTRAL UNIVERSITY
Student Employment Job Description
Job Title: BAMA Mascot Performer/Handler Classification: Student Employment Reports To: Director of Housekeeping & Events/Campus Store: Mascot Coordinator Date Posted: 8/18/26
Job Description:
Join the BAMA Mascot Team and help bring school spirit, energy, and fun to North Central University! Mascot team members serve as performers and handlers for BAMA at athletic games, campus events, and other approved appearances. Team members help create memorable experiences for students, fans, families, and guests while representing NCU in a fun, positive, and professional way.
No previous mascot experience is required. Training is provided.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Perform as BAMA or serve as a mascot handler at athletic games, campus events, and other approved appearances.
  • Bring energy, school spirit, and positive interaction to students, fans, families, and guests.
  • Work closely with other mascot team members to support safe and successful performances.
  • Attend required training, practices, meetings, and assigned appearances.
  • Follow mascot safety, confidentiality, costume-care, and performance expectations.
  • Help care for BAMA and mascot equipment before and after appearances.
  • Represent North Central University in a positive and professional manner.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Currently enrolled NCU student with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
    • First-year students must have successfully completed at least one semester at NCU with a 3.0 GPA. Transfer students may apply if they have completed at least one semester at another college or university and enter NCU with a 3.0 GPA.

  • Comfortable interacting with students, fans, children, families, and guests.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality regarding mascot performers and assignments.
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends, athletic games, and occasional special events.
  • Performer candidates should generally be approximately 5'8"-6'0". Final performer eligibility will be determined through costume fitting and evaluation.
  • Performing as BAMA is physically demanding. The costume is hot, heavy, limits visibility and movement, and can significantly increase fatigue. Performers must be able to remain physically active in the full costume for approximately 25-35 minutes, including walking, dancing, navigating stairs and bleachers, and interacting with crowds.
  • Able and willing to follow required safety practices, wear required performance base layers and cooling equipment, take appropriate recovery breaks, and communicate immediately if experiencing overheating, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or other concerns.
  • No previous mascot or performance experience required; training will be provided.

Additional Comments:
BAMA Mascot Team members will be selected through an interview and evaluation process. Candidates being considered for performer duties will complete a costume fitting and short performance/mobility evaluation before final performer selections are made. Proper costume fit and the ability to safely move and perform in BAMA will determine final performer eligibility.
Mascot performer identities and performance assignments are confidential, and team members are expected to maintain that confidentiality throughout their employment.
This is a developing mascot program, and team members will have the opportunity to help build BAMA's personality, traditions, signature moves, and game-day experience while having a lot of fun representing NCU!
Hiring Timeline:
Applications will be reviewed as received. Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview, with finalists invited to complete a mascot fitting and performance evaluation.
Hours/Week: Varies based on athletic and event schedules; approximately 2-6 hours per week during active periods.
