Job Summary: Under the direction of the Store Director, The Grocery Manager is primarily responsible for assisting and working with the Assistant Store Director in all aspects of the Grocery department operations. Assists in the operation of the store with emphasis on the Front-End and Grocery departments. In the absence of the Assistant Store Director, the Grocery Manager assumes the responsibilities of the Assistant Store Director.
Essential Job Duties:
  • Customer service
  • Directly supervises 6 or more employees which includes the Food Clerks, Grocery Clerks, Chill/Frozen Lead, Receiving Clerks and all other workers who are working in the grocery department
  • Trains and retrains all Grocery Department Personnel towards improved efficiency and increased job knowledge.
  • Proficiency in the ITASCA system
  • Assumes the roll of Manager on duty when Store Director and Assistant Store Director is not on duty.
  • Signs and approves all deliveries and orders, clearing of invoices, price changes, merchandise credits, weekly schedules based on a set weekly budget, personnel information forms, employee evaluation, accident reports, building maintenance job orders and damage claim forms and has authority to sign and approve all other functions/documents w/authorization from Grocery Division
  • Maintains and develops proper and good relationships with the various vendors.
  • Complies with and enforces all store activities in relation to the various governmental and regulatory agencies such as OSHA, Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health
  • Works, establishes and maintains good working relationships with all other departments within the store, and all other Grocery Departments within the Times chain to enhance and improve the merchandising of all grocery items
  • Supports and promotes sales programs initiated by the company and at the stores
  • Plans, organizes and delegates the day to day duties and projects of the grocery department. Follows up with the staff to ensure that all duties, customer service and special projects are being completed, and evaluates the grocery department staff and their work on a regular basis
  • Prepares various management reports and schedules, such as, work schedules, sales projections, Budget reports, research ad movements, monitor price changes and all other communications and memos as necessary
  • Attends DWH meetings and conference calls as scheduled
  • Responsible for checking the sales floor on a regular basis to ensure that shelves are properly filled
  • Reviews work methods for efficiency and safety
  • Ensures that proper merchandising techniques are utilized
  • Handles customer questions, complaints, accidents, special orders, or situations which merit attention or follow-up
  • Understand, enforce and abide by all company policies and procedures

Other Job Duties:
  • Ordering of merchandise manually or through the ITASCA system
  • Daily Cycle counts of the grocery floor to insure ITASCA system is ordering properly
  • Insures Reclamation is imputed daily, Display Collection and all other maintenance to upkeep inventory accuracy to maintain ITASCA information integrity
  • Stock shelves, prepare sales floor and spot checks as necessary
  • Planning, preparing and building of displays
  • Oversees and implements price changes
  • Receives merchandise and ensures that authorized items are received
  • Reviews and controls inventory in the backroom
  • Oversees the maintenance and cleanliness of the warehouse, grocery walk-in freezers, the dairy/chill cases and the grocery sales floor
  • Ensures that proper credit is received for damages and they have been returned to the respective vendors
  • Takes inventory
  • Operating cash register and bagging of groceries as needed
  • Ensures security of the backroom
  • Any tasks as deemed necessary by management

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs on own
  • Must be able to push and pull at least 1000 lbs
  • Stand for extended periods of time
  • Frequent bending and stooping required during the course of the workday
  • Requires manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for various activities
  • 18 years of age or older (operates heavy machinery)

Work Hours:
  • On average, minimum 40 hours/week

  • Must be able to work at any Times location on the island

Working Conditions:
  • Fast-paced environment that may be demanding and/or stressful
  • Work done primarily indoors with air conditioning
  • Warehouse is not air conditioned, and could reach temperatures of over 100 Degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months
  • Walk-in chills; temperatures between 30-40 Degrees Fahrenheit
  • Walk-in freezer; temperatures below 0 Degrees Fahrenheit

Qualifications:
  • Education/Training/Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess knowledge, experience and expertise of the grocery operations or similar job experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Grocery/Retail or similar job experience
  • Communication:
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Able to effectively communicate with others in English
  • Good phone etiquette
  • Possess acceptable written and verbal communication skills in English
