Family owned and operated since 1963, we specialize in household appliances, mattresses, furniture and home and car electronics. With 650+ employees we have grown to fifty brick and mortar retail locations in multiple states including several internet channels.

We are currently seeking an Assistant Controller to join the Accounting department at our corporate headquarters in Pontiac, Michigan. As an Accounting Controller, you will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the Accounting department and provides analytical expertise and participates in other accounting projects as assigned.

Assistant Controller Duties:

  • Responsible for leading the following accounting operation functions:
    • o Financial Reporting/Analysis
    • o Accounts Receivable
    • o Accounts Payable
    • o Fixed Assets
    • o Internal Store Audit functions
    • o Sales/Use Tax, Property Tax Returns Compliance
    • o Local/State/Federal income tax work papers and disbursements
    • o All outside financial and tax audits and compliance
  • Responsible for mentoring, managing, and evaluating a team of up to 20 individuals.
  • Set priorities for the department and guide the process using technical accounting expertise.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP.
  • Prepare monthly Income Statement/Balance Sheet variance analysis and reconciliations, and record necessary closing entries accurately and timely.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports.
  • Assist CAO with income tax work papers and disbursements for several companies.
  • Actively provide hands-on day-to-day oversight for timely compliance of the high-volume accounts payable function.
  • Oversee all financial and sales/use tax external audits as the primary contact for auditors to ensure timely, accurate completion.
  • Provide oversight/review of accounts receivable, internal store audit function, sales/use tax, and personal property tax returns.
  • As a leader of the department, routinely review that all accounting controls and company policies are followed to safeguard Company assets.
  • Lead initiative to update all written accounting policies, internal controls, and procedures.
  • Respond to Sr. Management’s information requests.
  • Effectively work across departments; coordinate efforts with purchasing, advertising, operational, real estate peers, web sales, and brick and mortar stores.
  • Participate in periodic on-site physical inventories 4 – 6 times a year on scheduled weekend days.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and correcting inefficiencies.
  • Develop standardized analytical tools/templates/reports for the accounting team using financial queries, v-lookups, and pivot tables.
  • Establish best accounting practices for the department that serves and supports over 60 multistate stores and departments.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for mentoring, evaluating, directing, hiring, and coaching all members of the Accounting Department.

Assistant Controller Qualifications:

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance with 10 plus years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Retail experience a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP.
  • Expert in developing and maintaining accounting procedures and accounting controls.
  • Able to wear many hats and prioritize workflow according to demands.
  • Strong leadership skills; Attention to detail, ability to collect and analyze information, problem-solve, confidentiality, and make decisions.
  • Experience with ERP Systems, data mining, modeling, and analysis.
  • Strong MS and Access Office skills
