Job description

Position Summary

HMT is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Design Engineer to support the engineering, design, analysis, and detailing of aboveground storage tanks and related infrastructure. This position will focus primarily on the design, modification, repair, and evaluation of storage tanks in accordance with API 650, API 653, API 620, AWWA, ASME and applicable industry standards.

The ideal candidate will work closely with project managers, inspectors, field personnel, customers, and licensed professional engineers to develop practical, code-compliant solutions for new construction, tank repairs, alterations, and integrity management projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and support aboveground storage tank design and evaluation per API 650
  • Support inspection, repair, and alteration activities per API 653
  • Review drawings, specifications, and fabrication details for code compliance
  • Evaluate inspection data, corrosion rates, and remaining life
  • Develop technical scopes for repairs, alterations, and retrofits
  • Support fitness-for-service evaluations in accordance with API 579 (as required)
  • Coordinate with inspectors, fabricators, contractors, and Authorized Inspectors
  • Prepare clear, concise engineering calculations, reports, and client deliverables
  • Provide technical support during construction, fabrication, and field execution

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Experience interpreting inspection data and fabrication drawings
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in written and verbal form

Preferred Qualifications

  • API 653 Certification
  • Professional Engineering License
  • Working knowledge of API 650 and API 653
  • Experience with API 579 / Fitness-for-Service assessments
  • Experience with vessel fabrication process
  • Experience supporting Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies
  • Experience with terminals, refineries or mission-critical facilities
