ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement, and maintain storage solutions; optimize data storage and retrievalDesign, implement, and troubleshoot network systems; ensure network security and performance

While both roles work within data centers and require technical certifications, Storage Engineers focus on data storage solutions and management, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network infrastructure and connectivity. Both roles are essential in enterprise IT environments but have distinct technical focuses.

What does a Storage Engineer do?

A Storage Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data storage systems within an organization. They ensure that data is stored securely, efficiently, and is easily accessible when needed. Their role often involves configuring storage hardware and software, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and planning for data backup and disaster recovery. Storage Engineers also work closely with IT teams to ensure storage solutions meet the company’s needs and comply with data security policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Storage Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Storage Engineer, you need a solid understanding of storage systems architecture, data management, and backup/recovery processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with storage area networks (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), cloud storage platforms, and certifications such as NetApp, EMC, or CompTIA Storage+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Storage Engineers collaborate with IT teams and address complex storage issues efficiently. These skills are critical to ensuring data integrity, system reliability, and optimal performance in enterprise environments.

Job description

Owns architecture, implementation, reliability, and lifecycle management of Veradigm's database platform across multiple engines and cloud providers. Designs new database systems end-to-end - from inception through production - including engine and deployment-model selection, server and storage architecture, multi-cloud infrastructure, and high-availability and disaster-recovery posture. Owns 24×7 production reliability and serves as the final escalation point for major outages, complex performance incidents, and cross-team database 911s. Acts as senior technical authority and subject matter expert across multiple database technologies (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Snowflake) and across AWS and Azure. Sets technical direction for major platform initiatives, including AI-augmented database operations
  • Determines database architecture for new business use cases - including engine selection, deployment model (IaaS vs. PaaS), topology, sizing, integration patterns, and availability targets up to 99.99% (4 nines) - across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, and Snowflake.
  • Designs and implements multi-cloud database infrastructure across AWS and Azure, including server, storage, and network architecture tuned for top engine performance. Authors and reviews database infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) for provisioning, configuration management, and lifecycle automation.
  • Oversees the security, integrity, and performance of databases across the production estate - including access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, HIPAA-aligned PHI protection, vulnerability management, and database integrity validation.
  • Implements monitoring, observability, and alerting across all database systems and cloud platforms, delegates alert response to team members, and audits incident resolution. Leads complex performance triage and 911 response across product engineering teams.
  • Provides technical leadership for peers and delegates tasks for both major and minor projects.
  • Independently implements and documents enhancement requests.
  • Independently reviews and approves technical design specifications.
  • Designs, audits, and tests high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures engineered to meet 99.99% (4 nines) availability SLAs - including cross-region failover, replication topology, RPO/RTO planning, immutable and air-gapped backup architectures for ransomware protection, point-in-time recovery, and validated restore drills.
  • Serves as final escalation point for database issues escalated by Database Engineers and by partner engineering teams - including production 911 incidents, complex performance investigations, and cross-team database-rooted problems across the full Veradigm engineering organization.
  • Independently owns multiple, concurrent minor or major database platform projects from concept to completion - including requirements gathering, architectural design, implementation, task delegation, schedule creation, deployment, testing, and handoff of the technology solution to the business.
  • Independently owns and is subject matter expert in multiple database technologies and cloud platforms - including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, and Snowflake - and across managed (PaaS) and self-managed (IaaS) deployment models on both AWS and Azure.
