What does a storage engineer do?

A storage engineer is an information technology professional who develops and oversees databases, networks, and other systems with large storage capacities. As a storage engineer, your primary responsibilities are to create storage systems and maintain the hardware. You are also responsible for backing up all information and providing ongoing technical service to your clients or employer. Your goal is to create a cost-effective storage system that can handle both a high volume of data and a large number of users. You must understand the specific needs of the client to give them what they need without wasting funds.

What does a storage engineer do?

A Storage Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data storage systems within an organization. They ensure that data is stored securely, efficiently, and is easily accessible when needed. Their role often involves configuring storage hardware and software, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and planning for data backup and disaster recovery. Storage Engineers also work closely with IT teams to ensure storage solutions meet the company’s needs and comply with data security policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a storage engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Storage Engineer, you need a solid understanding of storage systems architecture, data management, and backup/recovery processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with storage area networks (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), cloud storage platforms, and certifications such as NetApp, EMC, or CompTIA Storage+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Storage Engineers collaborate with IT teams and address complex storage issues efficiently. These skills are critical to ensuring data integrity, system reliability, and optimal performance in enterprise environments.

What are some common challenges storage engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise storage systems?

Storage Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and performance of storage systems, managing data growth efficiently, and maintaining data security and compliance. They must proactively monitor for hardware failures, optimize storage allocation, and coordinate with network and server teams to troubleshoot issues quickly. Adapting to evolving technologies, such as cloud integrations and automation tools, is also crucial for ongoing success in this role.

What is the difference between Storage Engineer vs Network Engineer?

Job description

Job Description

The NPDI Services Engineer - Power Systems drives new product development programs within Services, enabling successful deployment of AC/DC power systems, including medium voltage (MV), energy storage, and microgrid solutions. This role leads cross-functional execution, ensures service readiness, and partners with engineering and global stakeholders to deliver scalable, high-quality deployments across complex, integrated power environments.

Position Summary

The NPDI Services Engineer - Power Systems is responsible for planning and executing deployment programs across complex customer environments focused on AC/DC power infrastructure. This includes medium voltage systems, energy storage solutions, and microgrid architectures supporting critical power applications.

This role owns execution readiness and delivery alignment and ensures deployment strategies are scalable, repeatable, and aligned with serviceability standards. The position works closely with Engineering, Product Management, Service Operations, and Technical Support to drive successful implementation of integrated power solutions, while proactively identifying and mitigating field deployment risks and failure modes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead NPDI deployment programs for power systems, including AC/DC infrastructure, medium voltage applications, energy storage systems, and microgrid solutions, ensuring on-time and high-quality delivery.
  • Interface with Engineering and Product Management to translate design intent into executable deployment strategies, ensuring field readiness and serviceability requirements are embedded early in development.
  • Own Services deployment readiness for power system solutions, validating installation, commissioning, and operational procedures for field execution.
  • Partner with Engineering on failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) specific to AC/DC power, MV systems, and energy storage deployments, identifying risks such as protection coordination, system integration issues, and operational failure points, and ensuring mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Represent Services in design reviews and phase gate milestones, ensuring execution, commissioning, and maintainability considerations are incorporated across power system architectures.
  • Drive deployment strategies for integrated power solutions, including hybrid systems combining UPS, MV distribution, battery energy storage, and microgrid controls.
  • Lead pilot deployments and first-wave implementations, capturing field performance data, identifying gaps, and driving corrective actions prior to scaled rollout.
  • Coordinate cross-functional execution alignment across Engineering, Services, Operations, and external stakeholders to remove roadblocks and maintain program momentum.
  • Develop and standardize power system deployment playbooks, including commissioning procedures, protection validation steps, troubleshooting protocols, and service documentation.
  • Monitor early deployment performance and quality, tracking commissioning outcomes, field issues, and system integration challenges, and driving continuous improvement feedback loops.
  • Support parts and logistics readiness for power systems, including spare strategy for MV equipment, batteries, power electronics, and associated infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or equivalent Engineering degree, or work experience in power systems engineering.
  • Required technical experience:
    • Hands-on experience with AC/DC power systems in critical infrastructure applications.
    • Experience with medium voltage (MV) systems, including distribution, protection schemes, and commissioning considerations.
    • Experience with energy storage systems (battery technologies, BMS integration) and/or microgrid architectures (grid-tied/islanded operation).
  • Experience with integrated power systems solutions, including UPS, power distribution, and hybrid energy systems.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience interacting with customers in a technical or field execution environment.
  • Proven experience leading or coordinating cross-functional programs or complex deployments involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to interpret electrical diagrams, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and control system architectures.
  • Experience working with field service, commissioning, or service operations teams in power system environments.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to align technical and operational teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with medium voltage switchgear, relays, and protection coordination studies
  • Familiarity with grid interconnection requirements and microgrid control systems
  • Knowledge of battery energy storage system (BESS) integration and safety considerations
  • Project Management Certification (PMP) or equivalent
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Engineering Management

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced, execution-focused Services environment requiring strong cross-functional coordination and decision-making.
  • Travel up to ~20% depending on deployment and commissioning needs (domestic and international).
