What is a storage area network engineer?

Storage Area Network (SAN) Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot storage networks that connect servers to data storage devices. Their main role is to ensure data is stored securely, efficiently, and can be accessed quickly when needed. They work with technologies like Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and various storage hardware and software platforms. SAN Engineers are essential for organizations that handle large volumes of data and require high availability and performance from their storage systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a storage area network engineer?

To thrive as a Storage Area Network (SAN) Engineer, you need a deep understanding of storage technologies, networking concepts, and data management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with SAN hardware (such as EMC, NetApp, or HPE), Fibre Channel protocols, and certifications like SNIA Certified Storage Engineer are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure reliable data storage, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration with IT teams to maintain business continuity.

What are some common challenges faced by storage area network engineers, and how can they be addressed?

This role offers the opportunity to help shape and strengthen a complex statewide network environment that underpins critical academic and institutional operations. The work spans core infrastructure, long-range network evolution, and close collaboration with institutional and partner stakeholders to support resilient, high-performance services.
As Senior Wide Area Network Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across MDREN's statewide network environment, helping guide the design, operation, and continued evolution of WAN and optical transport infrastructure. You will contribute to both day-to-day network reliability and longer-term architectural planning, while working closely with member institutions, partner research and education networks, and internal stakeholders to support connectivity, service delivery, and network growth.
Responsibilities
