What Is a Stitcher?

A stitcher works in the performing arts industry. As a stitcher, you take the costume pieces prepared by the cutter and assemble and sew them together into full costumes. Stitchers know how to sew by hand and with a machine. Hand sewing is a vital skill because period costumes require a handmade look that sewing machines cannot replicate. Stitchers also need to accommodate the specific wardrobe needs of the actors who wear the attire; they must know how to add hidden snaps, buttons, or zippers. Outside of film and theater, a stitcher may also work on upholstery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Stitcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stitcher, you need proficiency in sewing techniques, fabric handling, and garment construction, often supported by vocational training or relevant experience. Familiarity with industrial sewing machines, sergers, and pattern-reading is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure garments are accurately assembled, meet quality standards, and contribute to efficient production processes.

What are some common challenges faced by stitchers working in a production environment?

Stitchers in a production environment often face challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while maintaining high quality and consistency in their work. They may also need to adapt quickly to changes in materials, patterns, or production volume. Managing repetitive tasks and ensuring ergonomic safety are important, as is effective communication with pattern makers, designers, and quality control teams to resolve issues promptly. Being detail-oriented and proactive in troubleshooting minor machine problems can help stitchers excel in these fast-paced settings.

What does a stitcher do?

A stitcher is responsible for sewing, assembling, and repairing garments, costumes, or fabric items, often in industries like fashion, theater, or upholstery. They use various sewing techniques and equipment, such as sewing machines or hand stitching, to complete detailed work according to specific patterns or instructions. Stitchers may also be involved in alterations, fittings, and finishing touches to ensure the final product meets quality standards.

Job description

Assistant Store Manager, Katy Mills

ABOUT THE COMPANY:

True Religion is an urban casual lifestyle brand focused on high-quality denim, activewear, accessories, and more—for men, women, and kids. Founded in 2002, we shook up the Los Angeles denim scene by re-engineering the classic five-pocket jean with our signature Super T Stitch and iconic horseshoe detailing—now synonymous with bold, unapologetic style and the True Religion legacy. Driven by a relentless commitment to craftsmanship, we design with one goal in mind: to stand out from the crowd. We don’t just create denim—we give it attitude, authenticity, and individuality.

THE PURPOSE:

The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager in driving store performance through strong sales execution, operational discipline, and exceptional customer experience. This role plays a key leadership position on the sales floor, helping to execute daily store operations, coach and develop associates, and uphold True Religion’s brand and selling standards. In the Store Manager’s absence, the Assistant Store Manager provides coverage and leadership to ensure continued performance, team engagement, and operational consistency.

THE ROLE (what you are accountable for):

  • Support Business Results: Partner with the Store Manager to drive store KPIs including sales, payroll, conversion, and shrink, while maintaining operational and visual standards.
  • Lead on the Floor: Act as Manager on Duty as assigned, setting expectations, leading shifts, and ensuring a positive, productive store environment.
  • Communicate Effectively: Reinforce daily priorities, goals, and expectations while fostering open, respectful communication across the team.
  • Coach & Develop Associates: Provide ongoing training, coaching, and feedback to support performance, engagement, and growth.
  • Execute with Ownership: Take initiative in planning daily workload, staffing, and floor execution to support business needs.
  • Problem Solve & Protect Assets: Use sound judgment to address challenges, resolve issues in real time, and support loss prevention and safety practices.
  • Deliver Exceptional Customer Experience: Champion True Religion’s selling culture by coaching in the moment and modeling brand-right behaviors.
  • Operational Excellence: Support scheduling, payroll controls, policy execution, and compliance with company procedures.
  • Visual & Inventory Execution: Maintain visual merchandising standards, support inventory accuracy, and ensure a clean, organized sales floor and stockroom.

YOU ARE:

You are a hands-on retail leader who thrives on the sales floor and enjoys coaching teams to succeed. You bring a positive, solutions-oriented mindset and lead with energy, integrity, and accountability. You are comfortable stepping into leadership coverage when needed, executing store priorities with confidence, and partnering closely with the Store Manager to drive results. You are motivated by growth—both your own and your team’s—and are committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience while consistently representing the True Religion brand.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1–3 years of experience in a retail supervisory, key-holder, or management role within a specialty or fashion environment
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to support store KPIs, including sales, payroll, and shrink
  • Strong coaching and communication skills with a hands-on leadership approach
  • Experience supporting visual merchandising, inventory management, and loss prevention practices
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced, high-volume retail environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort learning retail systems and technology

ADDITIONAL ROLE INFORMATION:

  • Compensation: The anticipated base salary range for this role is $19.00-$20.00 per hour.  This is a full-time non-exempt position. This range represents the low and high ends of the expected base salary range for this role based on the applicable location. True Religion reasonably expects to pay within this range in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and internal equity.
  • Perks: We offer a mix of benefits and perks designed to support our employees both on and off the sales floor. Eligible employees may participate in health benefits, a 401(k) savings plan with company match, merchandise discounts, and additional programs. Eligibility for certain benefits is based on position and hours worked in accordance with company policy.
  • Physical & Work Requirements: This role requires the ability to maneuver on the sales floor and stockroom, as well as stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, reach, climb ladders, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and peak retail hours.
  • Employment Eligibility: Employment with True Religion is contingent upon meeting applicable employment eligibility requirements.
